The book is written from the experiences of a confirmed abolitionist who helped escort escaped slaves to freedom by means of the underground railroad. The descriptions he gives makes one know of the desperation and panic the slaves felt in their dash for freedom from the lash. It also details the heroics of other persons who assisted the fugitives: such as the captain of a ship that happened to be carrying several slaves. The ship was stopped and searched by men trying to recapture the runaways. They thrust swords into hay that was stored on the boat but found nothing. Then they took an axe to several places on the deck but still found nothing. The captain of the vessel bluffed them by grabbing the axe and demanding they tell him where they wanted to search and he would use the axe. He then hit the deck with such force the men backed off and after making him pay the travel tax, let hum go. When he arrived at his destination he freed his grateful cargo from their hiding place. The retelling of the horrors these people from their own mouths cannot be equaled by stories handed down from book to book. I prefer my historical research to be done from resources written as closely to the actual occurrences as possible because as so often happens, one present day author of a book will make an assumption and state it: then someone else perpetuates that inaccuracy because "they saw it in a book, so it must be true".. As an historical researcher, if I can't verify it for myself, I won't use it. This book is from the actual participants. It is a welcome addition to my research resources.

This is a riveting read with descriptive details about people who broke away from their chains of slavery and made their way, often with help from people who were part of the elusive "underground railroad", to a life of freedom in Canada. It is both heart rending that any human being could be subjected to the horrors of slavery - sometimes with horrible brutality used to "keep them in line", and uplifting that so many managed to escape. It is incredible that anyone who is part of the human race could and would treat other humans in such despicable ways - and justify themselves in doing so. It is also heart warming that a segment of the northern states population were sympathetic to their cause, and enabled them to be free human beings for the rest of their lives.

A wonderful compilation of personal accounts of runaway slaves that passed through the shelter of William Still, son of slaves and an important cog in assisting those who had escaped slavery. This is an extremely important collection because it was first printed after the Civil War and before Reconstruction-otherwise it may have been lost-this is a reprinting. Bad masters/mistresses, okay masters/mistresses, these people just wanted to be free, but aside from the dangers, they had to possibly leave behind elders who needed them, dependent children, ailing spouses, etc. You will learn a lot from this read!

Loved it. It was honest, true and tells the REAL STORY of the ABOVE GROUND escape from south to north and some to Canada; some on the frozen Ohio River . The man who kept 1st hand accounts was accurate and truthful and as a result, we have now a real historical account of the scary and risky trips the slaves and families took to be free.

This little gem is exactly as its title says: FIRST HAND narratives. This book is a perfect read for anyone researching that time period whether sixth-grader or thesis writer. Naturally, the spelling and grammar are left as was originally written,spoken by men,women who despite a ban on education, often found the wherewithal to self-teach. Reads like you are THERE!

William Still was very instrumental in helping slaves to run on the Underground RR. He wrote his book in 1872. Anyone interested in Slaves Narratives should read this book. He gives comment on alot of slaves that did not become famous but neverthe less escaped. Nothing can take the place of real live witnesses. This is an excellent book for any ones library of AFrican American History

Dr Wallach was born and raised in Missouri , attended the University of Missouri, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Science of Agriculture. Dr. Wallach 's research has resulted in the publication of more than 70 peer review and refereed journal articles in the fields of nutrition and pharmaceutical research, and he has made major contributions to eight multi-authored text and reference books on these subjects. Dr.Ma Lan was educated in the Peoples Republic of China. Dr. Ma Lan received her M.D. from Beijing Medical University, took her residency in Peoples Hospital, Beijing and was a staff surgeon at the Canton Air Force Hospitals for eight years; she received her M.S. (Master of Science) in transplant immunology from Zhong-Shan Medical University, Canton, Peoples Republic of China. As with all Chinese doctors, Dr. Ma Lan is also trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr. Schrauzer is Professor Emeritus (UCSD), researcher, inventor, and author. He is the Director of the San Diego-based Biological Trace Element Research Institute. Gerhard N. Schrauzer studied chemistry at the University of Munich, where he received Ph.D. degree with summa cum laude in 1956 and became a member of its Science Faculty in 1963. He came to the United States in 1964 and in 1966 accepted a position as Full Professor at the University of California, San Diego.

If I could only own one book, it would have to be Epigenetics by Dr Joel Wallach DVM ND, his wife Dr. Ma Lan MD OMD and the Biomedical Nutritionist Dr. Gerhard Schrauzer PhD (who unfortunately passed away 5 months after Epigenetics was published in 2014...) You may ask "Why?" It's simple - the information contained within is worth it's weight in gold. Epigenetics should be read by every medical professional, every pet professional, every parent and most importantly by everyone who owns a human body.Epigenetics shines light in the dark recesses of the Big Pharma deception - that many "chronic illnesses" that we take for granted today are actually a result of common nutritional deficiencies. Since Medical Professionals rarely take a course in basic Nutrition 101 in medical school, how can they be expected to understand even the very basic of "diseases of yesteryear" such as Beriberi, Rickets, Scurvy or Pellagra? (deficiencies of Vitamin B1 - Thiamin, D, C and B3 - Niacin respectively.. though D is mislabeled as a vitamin when it is truly a hormone!) Folate deficiency results in abnormally large red blood cells... could this be contributing to the seeming pandemic of circulatory issues particularly in the micro blood vessels? (Folic Acid is synthetic and takes 4 steps to convert to "real folate" in the body, coupled with the fact that most people have MTHFR genetics further restricting this conversion process means that folic acid is NOT a viable substitute for REAL folate ie 5-MTHF... Challenge of the day - see if your medical professional is familiar with this basic accepted fact.) Even the word "Vitamin" was unknown prior to 1911, how have we come so far and then gone full circle forgetting these basic building blocks of nutrition in just a short 100 years of human existence?!I've personally read the research of a number of scientists and medical doctors who related arteriosclerosis as "scurvy of the heart" and congestive heart failure to B1 - thiamine deficiency (there's that Beriberi again!). In Epigenetics, Wallach relates performing an autopsy on a Rhesus monkey noting the pancreatic changes were typical of cystic fibrosis in humans - yet CF is supposedly a genetic defect ONLY FOUND IN HUMANS. There's even research linking MS to lead toxicity which can somewhat be alleviated by iron... There's so much research needing to be done with basic nutrition and connecting the dots to information already known (before it's forgotten), so why are most of the research dollars going to fund pharmaceutical research which are only designed to MANAGE the disease state instead of real nutrition designed to CURE the disease state?!? (Heck, even Dr. Thomas Scholbach in Germany has finally connected the dots showing that not only are May Thurner Syndrome, Nutcracker Syndrome, Pelvic Congestion Syndrome, CGCS / MALS and even the upper body Thoracic Outlet Syndrome are not only all commonly interrelated, he links them all to lumbar hyperlordosis and lumbar spinal injuries AND explains why EACH and ALL of these maladies are predominantly diagnosed in WOMEN 85% or so of the time. Not only that, but Dr. Scholbach FURTHER explains the WHY behind this predominance in women as a simple physics problem of the development of the female human pelvis during adolescence. However, all the research funds are again going to new surgical techniques and new medications, not into the basic foundation of WHY is this happening and what can be done to PREVENT this from developing in adolescent girls in the first place! Again corporate greed rules!)Another problem that stymies medical research - human pathology is related in terms of names of those who diagnosed or discovered specific traits. Animal pathology is related in descriptive names of changes in the organs and tissues, it's like decoding 2 different languages. Dr. Wallach understands both sides of the coin due to his unique educational background and professional experience both as a veterinarian as well as a human doctor. Dr. Ma Lan helps to decode the language of western medicine to the wisdom of ancient eastern understanding. Mix in the in vast knowledge of nutrition with Dr. Schrauzer and you have a winning combination for unlocking the truth behind these so-called incurable chronic illnesses.Did you know that each year all the dolphins were dying of congestive heart failure at Shedd's Aquarium in Chicago? Upon Wallach's intervention, once the dolphin's food was changed to correct the thiamin deficiency (beriberi), this problem completely abated.Did you know that in the 1950s the domestic turkey population suddenly were dying from aortic aneurysms after the industry had altered the turkey feed? Upon Wallach's discovery of the copper deficiency which has now been restored to turkey feed, it's very rare for turkey farmers to loose turkeys due to aortic aneurysms.Wallach found another zoo was unsuccessfully trying to breed arctic foxes, the few surviving pups from the small litters kept dying from a constantly changing variety of problems. Again, once the food supply was corrected (Wallach took the "genetically defective foxes" and put them on a toy breed dog food) within 2 years of his breeding attempts he had so many arctic foxes the zoo had to make a special display just for all the foxes. AND they begged Wallach not to do the same with their Elephants ;-)Indigenous cultures such as Native Americans use the word for "food" and "medicine" interchangeably. Let thy medicine be thy food.Do yourself a favor. Pick up a copy of Epigenetics. Keep it with you to read when you run errands especially where you may be waiting 5 or 10 or 15 minutes (I DARE you to read Epigenetics while waiting at your next doctor appointment! I'll even DOUBLE DARE YOU to buy an extra copy to give to your doctor or medical professional!) Plan to read Epigenetics in small tidbits. Not more than 3 or 4 pages at a time. I suspect you'll be fascinated and want to continue reading at greater length, however there's so much information packed into each bite-sized portion that it will take some time to digest fully before moving to the next course of the meal.Bon Appetit ! ;-)

In 2011 I was told around 18 times by medical professionals that, without their treatment, I would fairly shortly die a slow and painful death from throat cancer (non smoker). After their slash, burn and poison treatment I was fairly well convinced that they were right. On recovery I explored the Internet seeking to improve my 50% five year batting average. In mid 2014 I listened to Dr Joel Wallach ND, talk on nutrition, since then I have read most of his books, followed his advice as much as I can and I have to say that I remain really impressed. I no longer worry about dying from the cancer returning because Dr Wallach has explained to me in his books and talks the science of health, nutrition and longevity, and given me access to the raw materials that are essential for my body.Unfortunately I still lose far to many friends and family to preventable chronic diseases in part because I can't get them to read his books or follow my Facebook group Warrior Immune System that I set up to help present his work. I loved the book.

This book is hardly about epigenetics, but then how can you expect a book on epigenetics when the author doesn't even know what epigenetics is? Wallach states in the book, "The story of epigenetics is the story of nutrition and nutritional deficiency at the enzyme, chromosomal, and gene level, and how they affect the duplication and transmission of DNA." Really? Don't get me wrong; nutrition is extremely important and of course will affect gene expression, but to call epigenetics simply "the story of nutrition and nutritional deficiency" ignores the broader and more important implications of epigenetics.In line with being off the topic of epigenetics, the first 25% of the book is a protracted history of medicine throughout time, followed by a thrashing of modern medical practice. I don't necessarily disagree with Wallach's criticisms, but then once again, it has nothing to do with epigenetics. He goes on to talk a lot about nutritional deficiencies, such as pellagra and beriberi. He also gives a very strange example of how genetically similar ducks fed differently experienced different growth. Again, basic nutrition, not epigenetics. Wallach draws a strange conclusion also in this regard. He says, "A human parallel to the duck experiment is the Japanese immigrants, who originally came to the United States as small wiry people about four foot eleven inches tall and weighing 100 pounds soaking wet. Their genetic potential for growth and development was never achieved by eating the low calorie, low nutrient Japanese rice, vegetable and fish diet of their native Japan. The second generation Japanese, conceived and born in the United States, were a different story. The number-one son over the next generation was six feet four inches tall, weighed 240 pounds and played tight end for the USC football team. Their genetic background was the same, however, their potential for height and physical development was more completely fulfilled by having access to unlimited calories, meat, protein, milk, eggs, vegetables, and vitamin and mineral supplements." Also, if you want to put this in the context of affecting genes, it might be worth noting that these second generation Japanese with "access to unlimited calories, meat, protein, milk, eggs, vegetables, and vitamin and mineral supplements" also started having cancer, heart disease, and diabetes rates considerably higher than in their native Japan, and more in line with Americans.A huge portion of this book is also very much autobiographical information (strangely written in the 3rd person) dealing with Wallach's educational and professional career. I will admit some of it is interesting with regards to the obstacles he faced when going up against traditional medical and scientific ideas. But again, not about epigenetics, very little of which is covered in this book.When it comes to causes and cures of disease, Wallach seems to be prisoner to Maslow's "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" syndrome, as he sees everything as a mineral deficiency. He suggests that diabetes in nothing more than a simple mineral deficiency that can be cured with supplementation.Perhaps most disturbingly, he suggests homosexuality is also due to nutritional deficiencies, saying that he has "interviewed hundreds of gay men and women and found that in each case the mother of the gay male or female was in nutritional distress during their pregnancy. The women either had gluten intolerance (low efficiency of absorption), were alcoholics, or had low income with reduced access to healthy food, or failed to use prenatal vitamins and minerals, etc." WOW!I love the convenience of Kindle books, but one major drawback is unlike a printed book, you can't return it to Amazon. If you could I would return this one.

I have been an advocate of good health for many years. And regularly consumer products that are provided through Dr. Wallach's website. However, this book was far less than I expected. The first several chapters of the book are poorly organized and seem to have no correlation to the the books title. However, if one can persevere to the mid point of the book it becomes much more enjoyable and practical.

Each chapter is filled with excellent application questions and spiritual practices to engage in with God.Beyond just the chapters on each Enneagram number, there are 12 additional resources that the authors have developed in the appendix of this book that can help you engage with God in a very powerful way if you’re willing to invest the time to go there.I’ve read quite a few books on the Enneagram over the past ten years, and this one is very unique in the way it’s constructed. Even if you know a lot about the Enneagram itself, you’ve probably never engaged with the tool from the angle that this book was written. You’re getting a huge amount of wisdom packed into one small book!Side Note Worth Mentioning:There is a section near the beginning highlighting the definitions that the authors use throughout the book.These definitions are incredibly clear on what those terms mean, particularly as they relate to the Christian perspective of these definitions.I believe this is going to be extremely helpful for many who have been using these terms without clear mental images of what they are actually trying to say.Ex: What comes to your mind when you think of your true self? What comes to your mind when you think of your false self? These terms get thrown around a lot now in Enneagram resources, but they are so important to be defined well if we’re using them in our journey toward complete Christlikeness.

As a 73 year old, somewhat un-resourced male THREE, I have found this book to be an amazing resource. I have been an Enneagram student for over 15 years and this book has opened my eyes to previously undiscovered issues and challenges as I seek transformation. In this book, I recognized myself so many times and found it to be so helpful to read the authors’ insights.“Not enough” frequently echoes in my mind and this book helps me to see and to discover what to do with these feelings. Being wanted, valued and seen as excellent has been a driving force all my life and feeling insignificant has been intolerable. In this book, I see how I over-identify with my successes and/or failures. This book has helped me to understand the sources of many of these feelings and helped me create strategies to deal with them.I am now ready to retake the Enneagram test and to get a better grade… I found the authors discussion of “harmony triad” to be insightful. The book has helped me to notice how I respond when I am healthy and how I can find peace and harmony “in a way that isn’t just winning”.In conclusion, I found all of the Spiritual Rhythms for Threes to be particularly helpful. I loved the notion that “transformation happens when we intentionally put on the true, truthful self”. I found the practice of “Heart Presence with God” to be particularly soothing and peaceful. As I engaged with the recommended exercises, I felt a wonderful and peaceful Godly presence.In this book, I have discovered new insights about the THREE triad and I found the whole book to be extremely well written and a valuable and compelling read.

I was given the privilege of reading this book before it went public and I can say with confidence that the Calhoun's and Loughrige's have given us a feast for the soul. If you are an enneagram practitioner, this book will continue to deepen your understanding, application, and transformation. This is not for beginners but for those who have some immersion in the enneagram. With skillful word pictures, and personal examples, the authors take us on a journey of connecting the dots not only in our own type but more importantly connecting the way we have been created, (head, heart, gut). Being present to the presence in the present moment of our life is hard work but this book helps us do just that. The resources in the appendix are an added dessert to an already five star 9 course meal which you will find fully satisfying. This is a must have book in your hands if you are interested in being formed deeper in your walk with Christ or helping others in their journey.

About the Author

CHARLES-LOUIS DE SECONDAT, the jurist and political philosopher, was born at the Château de La Brede, near Bordeaux, France, on January 18, 1689. He attended the Oratorian College of Juilly and then studied law in Bordeaux from 1705 to 1708. Upon his father's death in 1713, he assumed the title of baron de La Brede and was appointed counselor of the Bordeaux parliament (1714). In 1716 he inherited his uncle's title of baron de Montesquieu, and also his office, serving as the deputy president of the parliament from 1716 to 1726.Montesquieu's first major work, Lettres persanes (Persian Letters), was published in 1721 and became a huge success. Supposedly written by two Persian travelers in Europe, Montesquieu satirized French institutions. In 1725 he published Le Temple de Gnide (The Temple of Gnide).Because of the success of Persian Letters, in 1728 Montesquieu was elected to the French Academy, the French lit­erary academy established by Cardinal de Richelieu in 1634 to maintain standards of literary taste and to establish the lit­erary language. That same year, seeking to complete his education by foreign travel, he set out on a grand tour of Europe, particularly England, where he remained from 1729 to 1731. In 1734 Montesquieu published Considerations sur les causes de la grandeur et de la decadence des Romains (Thoughts on the Causes of the Greatness and the Downfall of the Romans), one of the first important works in the philos­ophy of history. Montesquieu's greatest work, De l'esprit des lois (The Spirit of Laws), was published in 1748. It is a comparative study of three types of government: republic, monarchy, and despotism. Montesquieu held that governmental powers should be separated and balanced to guarantee individual rights and freedom. Attacked by the French clergy and his enemies at the Sorbonne, Montesquieu responded with Défense de "l'esprit des lois" (Defense of "The Spirit of Laws") in 1750. His last work, Essai sur le gout (Essay on Taste) was not completed.  Montesquieu died in Paris on February 10, 1755.

It seems to me that the memory of the people in the west, as concerned with the question of how their civilization came into being is gradually fading. That is why certain drifting away from the basic principles of, human rights, personal freedoms, law and governance has become a trend. This book is an excellent work that helped shape the constitution of the United States and many institutions of modern democracies. I believe every educated individual, especially those majoring in social sciences, need to read this book at list once.

For those of you who want to dig deeply into the History of Laws and where they came from and the original meaning of why that type of law was passed and what type of country or political climate existed for that type of law, this book is for you. It is very technical, detailed and thorough. It uses some words that were prevalent at the time of the law, so it takes some effort to fully understand the intent of some comments or the law. The only thing keeping this from 5 stars is the Wordiness of it. as usual for that time he takes 6 words to say what could be said in 3. But the thoughts show a deep understanding of what Laws are for and how different Societies make and use Laws.

This book isn't for the regular person to read. I decided to read this book because I liked Cornel's book "Black Prophetic Fire" and summary for this book was what I was interested in at the time. As I begin to read, I found myself looking in the dictionary too much to the point where it was an inconvenience. I can read most books but Cornel's vocabulary is too complex for me which made this book to difficult to comprehend. If you read this book and understood it I commend you.

This book helped me to rethink liberalism and its capitalistic connection. A new Marxism seems more attractive as a necessary component the Black Christian prophetic tradition.

This book captures the underlying issues of the social issues surrounding racial and economic injustice. West is brilliant in his analysis of complex issues and their by-products.

Cornel West is a Harvard professor, magnificent public speaker, activist, author (e.g., Race Matters,Democracy Matters: Winning the Fight Against Imperialism,The American Evasion of Philosophy: A Genealogy of Pragmatism,Ethical Dimensions of Marxism,Prophetic Thought in Postmodern Times,Prophetic Reflections: Notes on Race and Power in America, etc.), and preeminent "public intellectual." [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 185-page paperback edition.]He wrote in the Preface to this 1982 book, “American philosophy has never taken the Afro-American experience seriously… to launch the prospect of an Afro-American religious philosophy with a deep sense of cultural and political engagement is an implicit indictment of contemporary American political thought. Yet I am in this book neither to ridicule the racism of past and present American philosophers nor to highlight the harms of the professionalization of American philosophy. Rather, I shall attempt to put forward an Afro-American philosophy that is essentially a specific expression of contemporary American philosophy that is essentially a specific expression of contemporary American philosophy which takes seriously the Afro-American experience… Its primary objective is neither to achieve scientific status nor to acquire professional acceptance, but rather to aspire toward a demystifying hermeneutic of the Afro-American experience which enhances the cause of human freedom.”He observes, “Black people became Christians for intellectual, existential, and political reasons. Christianity is, as Friedrich Nietzsche has taught us and liberation theologians remind us, a religion especially fitted to the oppressed. It looks at the world from the perspective of those below. The African slaves’ search for identity could find historical purpose in the exodus of Israel out of slavery and personal meaning in the bold identification of Jesus Christ with the lowly and the downtrodden. Christianity is also first and foremost a … triumph of good over evil… The Christian emphasis on against-the-evidence hope for triumph over evil struck deep among many of them.” (Pg. 35)He argues, “We live now three decades after the end of European modernity. The very term ‘postmodernism’ reflects fear of the future…” (Pg. 41) He continues, “For the first time, European audiences look to the United States for artistic and cultural leadership… The point is not so much that the United States has come of age, but rather that the United States has seized Western cultural leadership in a declining and decadent age. Of course, the United States has no Jean-Paul Sartre or Martin Heidegger, no Samuel Beckett or even Gabriel Garcia Márquez. Yet cultural leadership in the West no longer requires such stellar figures; productive academic figures now suffice.” (Pg. 43)He explains, “I will attempt … delineating four ideal types that embody distinct Afro-American historical traditions of thought and action… The four theoretical constructs to be considered are the exceptionalist, assimilationist, marginalist, and humanist traditions in Afro-American history… [1] The Afro-American exceptionalist tradition lauds the uniqueness of Afro-American culture and personality. It claims a ‘sui generis’ status for Afro-American life in regard to form and content. It stresses what qualitatively distinguishes Afro-Americans from the rest of humanity, especially what sets them apart from white Americans… [2[ The Afro-American assimilationalist tradition considers Afro-American culture and personality to be pathological. It rejects any idea of an independent, self-supportive Afro-American culture… [3] The Afro-American marginalist tradition posits Afro-American culture to be restrictive, constraining, and confining. It emphasizes the suppression of individuality, eccentricity, and nonconformity within Afro-American culture… [4] The Afro-American humanist tradition extolls the distinctiveness of Afro-American culture and personality. It accents the universal human content of Afro-American cultural forms… This tradition affirms Afro-American membership in the human race, not above it or below it.” (Pg. 70-71)He asserts, “Afro-American critical thought must hold the assimilationalist response to be unacceptable. The wholesale renunciation of Afro-American culture only denigrates Afro-Americans. It deprives them of the autonomous elements of their way of life, the genuine creations of their cultural heritage… Just as the exceptionalist tradition looks at Afro-American culture and sees no evil, so the assimilationalist tradition looks and sees no good. The … latter … overlooks the possibility of cultural vitality and poverty-ridden living conditions existing simultaneously in Afro-American life.” (Pg. 80)He suggests, “The Afro-American humanist tradition reached it literary apex in the writings of Ralph Ellison. He stands out among Afro-American humanists, and all Afro-American artists of the other traditions, not only because of the superb mastery of his craft and the acuteness of this mind but also because he takes the Afro-American art forms of the past with more INTELLECTUAL SERIOUSNESS than to other Afro-American artists.” (Pg. 88)He summarizes, “Afro-American philosophy deems the norms of the humanist tradition desirable. These norms of individuality and democratic control of the political and productive processes are acceptable because they promote personal development, cultural growth, and human freedom. They foster the fulfillment of the potentialities and capacities of all individuals, encourage innovation and originality in Afro-American culture, and expand people’s control over those institutions which deeply affect their lives. In this way, Afro-American philosophy reconstructs the Afro-American past and critically evaluates Afro-American responses to crucial challenges in the present. It attempts to understand the Afro-American experience in order to enhance and enrich the lives of Afro-Americans; it demands personal integrity and political action.” (Pg. 91)He acknowledges, “In fact, postmodern times require an exaggeration of human possibility in order to keep alive the very notions of negation of activity of transformation. The Christian and Marxist views regarding human nature clash---and indeed are irreconcilable---but in one-dimensional societies which render revolutionary praxis a utopian dream and oppositional activity a nostalgic memory, naïve overstatements of human possibilities resemble divine revelations.” (Pg. 99)He outlines, “I shall examine briefly the evolution of the prophetic Christian tradition in the Afro-American experience---which I refer to here as black theology---and suggest that the present expression of this tradition in postmodern times is black theology as critique of capitalist civilization. The first stage can be viewed roughly as ‘Black Theology of Liberation as Critique of Slavery.’ … The second stage can be viewed as ‘Black Theology of Liberation as Critique of Institutional Racism.’ This stage… found black prophetic Christians principally focusing attention on the racist institutional structures in the United States which rendered the vast majority of black people politically powerless… It is not accident that many of the salient black prophetic Christian leaders…favored during this stage a return of black people to Africa… The most effective black prophetic Christian leader during this stage was, of course, Martin Luther King, Jr.” (Pg. 102-103)He continues, “a third stage commenced: ‘Black Theology of Liberation as Critique of White North American Theology.’ In this stage, which lasted less than a decade (1969-1977), we witnessed the first full-fledged academic expression of liberation theology in general and black theology of liberation in particular in the United States… This particular stage was an intellectually creative one---partly in response to the spontaneous rebellion of black people in the streets, the more disciplined political praxis of Black Power groups, and the paralysis of most white North American theologians. Yet the conception of black theology was, in retrospect, understandably narrow: it focused principally on the failings of white North American theology, especially its silence on racial justice and the white racism within mainstream establishment churches and religious agencies.” (Pg. 104)He goes on, “The fourth stage—and the stage that black prophetic theologians are presently transcending---can be viewed as ‘Black Theology of Liberation as Critique of U.S. Capitalism.’ …Yet the prevailing conception of black theology of liberation remains inadequate. I believe that a new conception of black theology of liberation is needed which preserves the positive content of its earlier historical stages, overcomes its earlier (and inevitable) blindnesses, and makes explicit its present challenges.” (Pg. 105)He points out, “Aside from James Cone in his latest writings, black theologians remain uncritical of America’s imperialist presence in Third World countries, its capitalist system of production, and its grossly unequal distribution of wealth. Therefore we may assume they find this acceptable. If this is so, then the political and socioeconomic components of black liberation amount to racial equality before the law, equal opportunities in employment, education and business, and economic parity with whites in median income. Surely, this situation would be better than the current dismal one, but it hardly can be viewed as black liberation.” (Pg. 111-112) He continues, “Black theologians hardly mention the wealth, power, and influence of multinational corporations that monopolize production… black theologians do not emphasize sufficiently the way in which the racist interpretations of the gospel they reject encourage and support the capitalist system of production… Instead of focusing on these matters, black theologians draw attention to the racist practices in American society.” (Pg. 113) He summarizes, “Therefore, class position contributes more than racial status to the basic form of powerlessness in America.” (Pg. 115)He concludes, “Political liberalism is alive in the Afro-American community … because as long as the only alternatives presented to Afro-Americans are liberalism and right-wing Marxism, liberalism will prevail… The present dilemma of the Afro-American liberation movement is to find its way between the Scylla of bourgeois liberalism and the Charybdis of right-wing Marxism.” (Pg. 145) He adds, “Revolutionary Christian perspective and praxis must remain anchored in the prophetic Christian tradition in the Afro-American experience which provides the norms of individuality and democracy; guided by the cultural outlook of the Afro-American humanist tradition which promotes the vitality and vigor of black life; and informed by the social theory and political praxis of progressive Marxism...” (Pg. 146)This book should be considered “must reading” for any one studying Black Theology, Black Religion and the Black Church, Democratic Socialism, and Progressive thought in general.

I will give the seller the benefit of the doubt because it looks like a new book and this could have happened during printing/manufacturing process, but a section consisting of 30 pages is wrinkled and has a deep gouge through all the pages.

Hospitality is a topic that scares me so much that I'm surprised I bought this book! I was hooked immediately and haven't been able to put it down. It is a life-changing book and the author is very open, honest, and gentle in her encouragement. It's also about more than just hospitality. It is about living a rich, satisfying life. Beautifully written and one of the best "mom" books I've read. I highly recommend it and cannot wait to find small opportunities show hospitality to those around me.

Wow - this book is so convicting while somehow still being very encouraging for this major introvert! Hospitality has been on my mind a lot lately - God had already been planting a seed to "open my door" more so when I saw the theme of this book I knew I needed to read it. I'm anxious to start putting some things into practice, and hoping and praying that I can someday get close to Jen Level of hospitality :) Jen - thank you for sharing your heart and what you have learned over the years. I think the things that I learned will truly be life changing for me and my family.

This is one of the best book on hospitality that I have read. Opening our homes and our hearts is not always easy. It is something that many people struggle with. In this book Jen shares her experience and heart for hospitality. She shares the difference between entertaining and true hospitality. Yes, there is a difference and Jen shares all about it. This book made me laugh, cry, and left me thinking about how I can do more.

This is the best book on the heart and soul of hospitality. Some good practical ideas, but you can find those in many books on the subject. Where this one differentiates itself is by going above and beyond, digging deeply into the fun, fears, excuses and potential greatness of opening yourself up to those around you. So many shared lessons learned sets your expectations and heart in the right place to give an open lifestyle your best try!

I must admit that I am bad when it comes to having people over. I think I have to have everything perfect and I worry about being judged. Jen defines hospitality as a form of worship. Personal accounts of her entertaining bring about good ideas. No need to spend a lot of money.

This book! It has changed my life. I do not say that lightly, it has changed my perspective on hospitality in so many ways. I have seen Jesus in a whole new way through what Jen teaches in this book, it has freed me up to open my door to my messy house/messy life, as well as changed me to have an open-door heart. Jen, thank you for writing this book!! It is soooo needed in our world of social media, technology, and false sense of community. As a stay at home mom, it is sometimes hard to feel like you are able to “do great things” in the world, but now I see that I have an incredible (dare I say the greatest) opportunity every day to CHANGE a generation forever - just by opening my life to others. 🖤 LIFE CHANGING.

What a great book! I love the focus on reaching out to others with true hospitality wherever you are and whatever you are doing. It’s not dependent on menu or home decor but rather on attitude of the heart. The real life stories sprinkled throughout made me laugh and cry. This is an easy read with with richness in the message and a fresh take on true hospitality.

This book (and the Bible study bought separately) has changed my life. It is transparent and comfortable, while being uncomfortably convicting. This message is opening my eyes to my responsibility and honor of opening my home and my heart to be Jesus to the world. Came into my life at exactly the precise moment it should have.
