Review

"Though surely dark at times, Panian's journey to salvation and his eventual transition into a leading intellectual and education leader in the Armenian Diaspora is an adventure steeped in hope, courage, and optimism. His description of the horrors he was forced to live, coupled with the hopefulness that his new life promised after Antoura, makes the English translation of Goodbye, Antoura an invaluable addition to the already rich library of genocide memoirs that give the survivors a voice." (Rupen Janbazian Armenian Weekly)"Goodbye, Antoura stands out as a telling, concise, and human portrait of a painful and traumatic component of the Armenian genocide. Beyond academic circles, the memoir could find a special audience among young adults, much as The Diary of Anne Frank has done. Panian's skill at weaving the celestial with the hellish is a true gift to the reader; through Panian's work, one can experience intimately this knot of angst and awe that is often concomitant with being a thoughtful child." (Nora Lessersohn,Journal of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association)"A poignant story of a child's stubborn determination to survive, Goodbye, Antoura is an important book about memory, history, and the Armenian Genocide." (Davide Rodogno author of Against Massacre)"Goodbye, Antoura is far more than a personal memoir. Karnig Panian has captured with literary creativity the spirit of person, family, community, nation and humanity―the essence of identity itself. Within this saga of an Armenian orphaned boy being forcibly stripped of his identity is a story of universal relevance." (Richard G. Hovannisian author of The Republic of Armenia)"A remarkable and unforgettable book. It is an indispensable tool for awakening our consciences and restoring our collective sense of decency and our solidarity with all those who have suffered the horrors of genocide." (Vartan Gregorian)"This searing account of a little boy wrenched from family and innocence manages to retrieve irrepressible flashes of great humanity amid the horror and chaos. It is a literary gem." (David Gardner Financial Times)

This is a short book--about 180 pages. I'm glad it was short---it was terribly painful to read. Not because of poor writing by Panian. The author did an excellent job of telling the story of the Armenian genocide--without dramatics. I think the fact that the book was written as the remembrance of the little boy who experienced it--is why it was so hard to read. I think this segment of the genocide--the orphans who had lost all their families and then were told to forget about them and their culture--is truly an untold story. I plan to read another book about the Armenian genocide--this one was my first--because of the response of my Turkish guides when I was in Turkey a few years ago. We actually went to far eastern Turkey near where the majority of the genocide occurred. The guides did not want to talk about it--in fact they even portrayed it as something that really had happened. 1 1/2 million people were killed. Turkey has done an outstanding job of covering up the genocide they unleashed.

A TRUE STORY OF SURVIVAL.A 5 year old boy survives against all odds during the forced deportations and massacres by the Ottoman Turks of Armenian families from their homeland into the deserts of Syria. After loosing every member of his family in the harsh conditions of the desert and the cruelty of the Turkish soldiers, he finds himself in a camp orphanage in Lebanon where the kids were forced to change their identity. The Antoura orphanage was another project of the Armenian genocide by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk; its administrators sought to transform the children into Turks by changing their Armenian names, forcing them to speak Turkish, and erasing their history. This is an incredible story of determination, survival and how children recognize injustice and fight back in the most imaginative ways. A MUST READ!!!!! A PAGE TURNER!!!

The story of Karnig is the story of my Grandfathers (Ardashes) cousin. Reading it takes me back to when my Grandparents came to visit and my "dede: told me the story's of Gurin, its hot springs, and hour clan was quite sizable once before the Turks decided to slaughter us. It is especially difficult to read his memoirs when it hits so close to home. Thanks to the perseverance of Karnig, my Grandfather Ardashes and all of the Grandparents and great-parents of that generation the Panian clan has added three heirs to its thrown and perhaps one day will grow to be as sizable as it once was before in Gurin.

Why can't the Turks do as the Germans have done? Acknowledge the atrocity so the present can go on living. Modern day Germans are not responsible for the Holocaust. Modern day Turks are not responsible for the Armenian Genocide, but only when they freely acknowledge it. This is a remarkable personal account from one survivor--of what did really happen.

Chapters are divided chronologically. Most of the memoir is focused on Panians life in the orphanage after their exodus from Gurin to the desert deportation camps. Many footnotes are included and were very helpful.Pages 59-65 and pages 157-166 are strictly black and white historical photographs showing the orphanage, orphans, important leaders, and Panians later life after the war.The memoir starts when Panian is 5 years old which makes it difficult to trust every detailed recollection. As stated, the bulk of his story lies within the orphanage and sometimes get wordy and listless. However, his life in the desert deportation camp and his life after the orphanage was somberly intruging.

Sad but fascinating about the Armenian Genocide. I donated it to the public library here and dedicated it to my dear friend's father, also dear, who was affected as a small child and whose life was formed by the decade long Genocide and whose USA citizenship I stood up for long ago.Everyone should know about the Armenian Genocide.Hitler used it somewhat as a prototype for his evil final solution

As an Armenian who knows little about my families history other than that my great grandmother, who lived through the genocide, survived and would not speak openly about here horrific experience at the hands of the Turks, I was greatly moved and thankful for this story told by Mr Panian. The story despite the horror it shares is a wonderful story of survival and determination to remain grounded in faith and family despite attempts to strip that away. I would recommend to anyone who is interested in a heart felt story and the happenings of the Armenian Genocide. I feel like it's an appropriate read for ages 13 and above.

Good book to gain perspective of the Armenian Genocide but I am doubtful of it's status as a true Memoir because the narrator was 5 years old during his time so I kind of doubt his reliability as a narrator. I wonder if it is a compilation of stories that Panian collected from many people to create his memoir but I would call it more "based on a true story" than a memoir.

Ordered this map with high hopes and was disappointed when I recieved it. The roads & important areas are printed in very light pink ink and on the beautiful green background, are actually difficult to read unless you are VERY close to the map. The paper is a bit thin, so if wanting this map, I would advise buying the laminated version. The map I received had 2 little tears at the top right hand corner (suposed to be new) and when I tried to roll it back up to put into the tube, I now know how the tears happened - paper very hard to roll back up without damaging. It seemed to be the best of what Amazon offered and included the details I was wanting -state parks, etc, but perhaps it is not the best map available. Returning & ordering a different map on a different site and getting the laminated one this time!

This is one detailed and very well made map which won't tear as a result of the use of tear resistant material (seems like a combination of paper and plastic). Lots of dirt roads, scenic highways and since it's a huge, two-sided map, the kms/inch ratio is high (1"=25 Km or 15.5 miles), so no squinting is necessary. I'm planning to take it on a road trip to Morocco in a few months and it has been a great trip planning tool. Will also be fun to hang it on the wall when I return, since I know it's gonna return fully intact.

I was on a group trip that involved overland travel throughout Morocco. This map helped me follow where we were going. I also was able to better guess which side of the bus to sit on to keep the sun off me. If I was driving myself, I would have wanted a map that was intended for a road map, with city maps of the major ones.

The video they provided was super helpful. This was my first liquid screen and it was pretty easy. Spraying your fingers was a good trick. Got it good the first time, too bad I did it before turning on the phone cuz I got a lemon Pixel 3! I'll try again when I get my replacement

This is a handy and durable traveling companion. The writing is clearly legible and the map itself fits comfortably in the side pocket of my camera bag. It was great for me to mark all of the locations that I visited with a pen and then use my scribblings for reference when I wrote about my travels later. I also did not have to worry if it rained as the paper is waterproof and tear resistant. Who needs an expensive GPS device that can be stolen when you can have one of these? Long live real maps!!

This is a great map for anyone who plans on doing their own driving while in Morocco. First, it is plasticized, so it doesn't tear, and it folds up again easily. It is very accurate. It has the great feature of indicating points of interest and tourist sights in an easy to understand format. Such a good map that I will plan on purchasing it for any future travels where we intend to do,our own driving.

Excellent map used on Morocco road trip. Used in conjunction with Garmin GPS and Google Maps. Needed all three. Nice that this map includes scenic routes and gas stations. Nat Geo products are excellent.

Practical and easy to use.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-These books feature the same characters and setting as Wells's Yoko (Hyperion, 1998). Mama, Don't Go is especially enjoyable. Yoko is eager to begin school. She looks forward to meeting new friends, learning songs, and enjoying all of the activities in Mrs. Jenkins's classroom. She does enjoy it, except that she cannot bear to be separated from her mother, who agrees to stay. This continues until the fourth day, her mom's birthday, and, with the teacher's guidance, Yoko agrees to let her mother leave and return for a surprise at the end of the day. By Friday, the kitten is ready to be on her own, with a little help from a new friend. Wells and Wheeler's expressive animal characters, done in pen and ink and watercolors, convey a great deal of recognizable emotion. Yoko is a prim little cat; her large green eyes alternately crinkle with worry or shine with curiosity. In the final image, she looks as relaxed as her confident friend, Timothy. In The School Play, when Mrs. Jenkins assigns parts about dental hygiene, everyone is happy except Yoko-she is cast as an unglamorous cavity that just sits on stage and is silent. However, she finds a way to make her role more interesting. Though the story is a bit slight, these characters are as charming and winsome as ever. Both books are well crafted for beginning readers, or as read-alouds for young children preparing for school.Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

My daughter just started Kindergarten and was being picked on because of bringing her lunch in from home in a bento box. I searched the web for a book that addressed this and came across Yoko. It's an adorable book, easy to read and easy for my daughter to understand. She immediately identified with the main character. I liked how the story didn't force all the characters to suddenly change and like her food, but that the main character made a good friend through the experience. We don't pack sushi for her lunch, but this story is great for any child who is being singled out for bringing in a lunch that other children say is "yucky" or "weird". The book helped me have a conversation not only about being bullied at school over lunch, but also about how new foods need to be tasted before you think they don't taste good.

This is one of my all-time favorite read-alouds for children. I can't figure out why it's out of publication. Yoko's expressions are priceless as she endures the typical grade-school taunting from her peers, particularly about her ethnic lunch food of choice (sushi). When my own daughter suffered the same experience in kindergarten (we are Japanese and she naturally wanted to take sushi for lunch--and then no one would sit by her), I asked the teacher if I could bring this book to school and read it to the class. What a cute way to teach the kids a valuable lesson without pointing any fingers! I wanted to give this book as a gift to a friend, and my only frustration was that, not wanting to pay an exorbitant price since it's now out of publication, I chose a "gently used--like new" copy and the seller did not disclose that it had once belonged to a public library. My "gift" came with "Westboro Public Library" stamps all over the inside cover and front pages!

Great for teaching tolerance to kids. Also, it's a cat. So that's cool too. I like cats.

We love this book and give it as a gift to friends with new babies. It's a story about acceptance and encouraging friends to try new things - in this case through food. Kids find this book funny and adults will enjoy it too.

My daughter is 3 and this is her current favorite book. The story is simple and sweet with some unexpected twists and the illustrations are beautiful. I think it's a good lesson in being open-minded and trying new things, which is perfect for a preschooler. It even has her excited about trying sushi.

My favorite Yoko story. Why can't we all get along???

This was my favorite book when I was a kid. The first time I ever saw it the librarian pulled it from the shelf to read it to the class. I was probably in 1st grade. I loved the pictures and the story. I don't remember it well now, but I know I checked it out again and again. I loved everything about it. I will be buying a copy for a kindergarten class I was lucky enough to observe.

This was a book that was formy oldest daughter for a book report 2yrs ago, I'm glad I got it on time.
