This is a highly entertaining adaptation of the Ring on the Nibelung. The artwork is excellent, the coloring appropriate. If you like historically important stories and/or modern comics and have any interest in the other, or their fusion, then you could do a lot worse than checking out this book. It's huge and beautiful and fun.The other recommendation I would make is to use this to introduce others to mythologies, such as getting kids to take an interest in older stories.

This adaptation of Wagner’s Ring cycle is an excellent and worthy way of conveying the story to a different kind of reader. The drawings capture the nuances of the epic in a delicate way, and the exceptional programming of the Kindle version, taking the reader through the story frame by frame, enhances the reading pleasure immensely. I can only imagine that Wagner would have been proud to be associated with this version.

I ordered this last year, and it was stolen. This year, I found one at my door left in a bag. Was it the stolen one? I dunno. If so, all I can figure is that someone saw a box from Amazon in front of my door, figured it was, like, a game console or DVD boxed set or something, and after they took it, opened it and went, "What the !@#% is a Nibelung?" Then they looked at it and saw that it was a comic book and they thought, "Eh, I'll give it to my nephew, he likes comics." Then they found out it was an adaptation of an opera. And they were like "#!$!, worst stolen item EVER!!" And then they forgot about it and then found it in their closet and gave it back.That's just supposition.It's a beautiful book that I've wanted for years.

I had the comics for Rhinegold and Valkyre and Siegfried and Twilight of the Gods in the Paperback vol 2. I actually read this and Roy Thomas and Hil Kane's graphic novel on The Ring to prepare me for watching the massive MET opera by Maestro Levine. And now it's nice to have this high quality hardback with quality paper + extras to commemorate this great artistic achievement. I am stunned the book was only $18 for a 400+ page color graphic novel. Do not know how they can possibly make a profit on this book. Highly recommended.

I bought this for my 9yr old son whom I'd been struggling to instill a love of books in. I finally discovered he likes graphic novels, as many boys do. While taking a philosophy we discussed the deeper meaning of this book, and to my surprise I found it in graphic novel form. How cool that both my son and I can enjoy and discuss a graphic novel together!! It's a great buy! Definitely recommend!

How to handle a complex classic in a manner to explain all the interactions, plot lines, and motives of the characters ... this graphic novel certainly does it. Just be aware that the cover art is of higher quality than the illustrations inside. The Ring of the Nibelung is one of my favorites, but because the opera is in German, I did not always catch what was going on. Now I do.

Russell has done it again, breathing new life into Wagner's story by translating it into a contemporary visual medium. His visual style always works well in fantasies, so it makes the ideal vehicle for a story like this. Staging it to the fullest would be nearly impossible, with its varied surrounds of mountains, meadows, rainstorms, caves and more. Imagery on paper supports these scenes in ways that would be nearly impossible for stagecraft.The story comes through strongly, too. And what a story - the operatic style in music is an acquired taste, and many younger readers won't have taken the time to acquire it. As a result, they might not have heard of the swindling gods, taunting Rhinemaidens, lovestruck valkyrie, incestuous relations, and other seedy goings-on. More than just the adventure of the story, there's a whole soap opera (if you'll pardon the term) in play. And, who knows? The gorgeous art and thrilling story might even tempt someone to give a listen to some of Wagner's incredible music.-- wiredweird

Really great graphic comic book version of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungen. I had a different paperback version, but it was not nearly as thick and detailed as this hardcover version. To me, this is a collectors item, yet I obtained this one inexpensively--a former library book. No comic book kid is going to wade through this, but an adult Wagnerian will be very amused. Put on your headphones and peruse.

I had read Ambercombie's first trilogy and very much enjoyed it. I was a bit iffy about starting this one as from the reviews it was obvious that most of the main characters would not be a part of it. It is set in a different part of the world. I felt I might be a bit disappointed to miss the main characters - which had been quite developed, and worried there would not be a lot of time to have similar quality characters done in what is essentially a stand alone novel.Having said all that, there was no need to worry. He does an excellent job putting together a couple new characters you quickly care about while pulling in a bunch of secondary character from the first trilogy. The fact that it is relatively a stand alone novel means it is very fast paced - actually I respect the author in not trying to pull this story out into another trilogy which he could have easily done. Definitly an enjoyable read that I would highly recommend and I look forward to reading the later books in this world.

I recommend the audible version of this epic novel narrated by Steven Pacey as an absolute must if you enjoy books on audio. I have yet to find any other narrator that brings a story to life with such authenticity. His timing is right, his emphasis, tones, and the voices are all unique, for each character! He is not reading a book, as so many others do, he is performing it. And that is the reason I made it more than part way through this book. Which is not to say the book isn't well written, because it definitely is. It is, however, bleak, full of gore in fully descriptive detail, and literally nearly every character is a murderer with few redeeming qualities. The author is relentless, does not take it easy on the 'audience' or the characters, and the plot can seem somewhat slow. Even listening, I was 2/3 through and wondering what on earth the point was. Thinking I had never before read a book where I found it hard to in some way relate to, root for, or like any of the characters very much. If you're like me, and have never read anything by Abercrombie to know his style, or have never read a story so incessantly dark and bloody, and you try to read it yourself rather than listen to Pacey's excellent performance, you just might quit before it's done. And that, as I found out, would be a mistake. By the time it was done, I WAS caring about and rooting for the characters. In a very human and realistic sort of way. Because this story is not pretty, and neither are the people in it. But I was able to grow to appreciate a book unlike any other I've ever experienced. The author is masterful with his twists and the subtleties in his crafting allow the story to build and grow over time in a way that sucks you in slowly and doesn't spoon feed you. It is also sprinkled throughout with humor that had me chuckling or barking out laughter.I have since started Joe Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy with The Blade Itself on audible and am finding it just as awesome. Without any reservations I can say that this book is, thus far, my absolute favorite audible experience, and one I highly recommend!

Well, this was a hell of a ride. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a well told revenge story.I've come to expect greatness from Mr. Abercrombie after recently finishing his First Law trilogy. Best Served Cold, the first of three books set in the world of the First Law, met that expectation and perhaps went a bit further. His writing is tight, his pace breakneck, his characters memorable, all that I came to love about his first trilogy is back in force.Sitting back after reading this one, and reminiscing on the first trilogy, I'm left with two main thoughts. First is this. Joe will not give you what you want. He will make you want things. You will want a certain character to do X, but have a fear that they will do Y, and Joe will laugh and make them do Z. Leave what you want behind and enjoy the ride. The second is rather bleak, and it is this; if you try to change someone for the better, more often than not they'll change for the worse. Horrible right? But interesting to watch.If you've not read it, I recommend it. I think that you could even read this one without having read the First Law, though you'd miss knowledge of plenty secondary situations and characters. I'll be diving into The Heroes very soon.

I find myself always in an awkward position when trying to review a book. Always too much time has passed since reading. But to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and series would be an understatement. I had heard of Joe Abercrombie and had planned on reading his books for many years, but never got around to doing it. There was always another book from my growing list of authors to read. I've read gifted writers, and Abercrombie ranks as one of the very best! Recently, I've been reading and listening to the audible narration, and if you haven't done that, I wholly recommend it. I don't remember ever being so entertained by both the writing of Abercrombie and the narration of Steve Pacey; had me trembling with excitement and shock while at the same time laughing out loud. I really can't give the author and this series enough stars.

So, I'll give it to you straight up:Pros:The book is easy to follow.It's great for beginners (if you are a beginner that's a pro)It covers the main social platforms of todayThere are a lot of noted resources for supportCons:The book is only the basicsThe book does not dive into how to make money using social media, just how to use it. For example, it talks about Pinterest, but not how you make money doing the things you're told to do. (At least not in great detail)The how to use it is limited to one central idea. (For example, LinkedIn is all about building a profile, but nothing about advertising)The book isn't digital. This book would be great in a digital format wherein you could interact with it, check out the many links, etc.Result:If I'm unfamiliar with a specific platform, this book gives me a great, fast into to that platform. The book is awesome if you're a one-man-marketing department with a need to quickly get up to speed. As a professor, I probably wouldn't use this book because of it's basic nature, but as an entrepreneur with a small business I see the application.My $0.02

Jason (the author) provides valuable examples and details for context to see how each might (or might not) fit into your own work and customer interaction. And then he gives you specific tasks to help you determine what you should be focusing on, help you gather relevant, specific information, and begin building what will serve you best. Most importantly, McDonald is super encouraging, and shapes your expectations (of the platforms and yourself in this work). I received this book at a discount in exchange for providing unbiased feedback. I bought the 2016 version of this workbook towards the end of 2016, and never really got around to doing much with it. I was hoping the 2017 version, though, with its updates, would include working with Instagram which is where I want to focus my marketing efforts (unfortunately it didn't). I consider myself a beginner who really resists marketing, and even with just getting on board with social media in general. This book, however, did an excellent job of guiding me through the processes. I appreciate that so much! I found most chapters were relevant and helpful, with timely prompts for review, and tools and downloadable sheets for exploring further. Invaluable! Jason McDonald's writing is succinct, and easy to read and comprehend, putting it a notch above most other social media marketing resources out there. He seems to know just what we need, even when we might not! I still hope in the next version that Instagram will be included! Thank you for a really great resource!
