This scholarly treatment of the life and work of the apostles leaves me with an enduring sense of awe for the way God entrusted the message of the gospel to them. Shelton's in depth portrayal of their legacy is truly inspirational. This book gives me a new appreciation of the legitimacy of the apostolic authority of the New Testament as Scripture.

Really enjoyed reading about each apostles supposed journeys and how each was marked by a faith to purse and to spread the message and gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.

I absolutely loved this book! So much of what happened to the Apostles after the ascension of Christ is speculation, and has driven this Bible Nerd absolutely nuts. "The Quest for the Historical Apostles" was such a treasure. The author's drive to find the factual truth behind the Apostles was refreshing and mirrored my own heartfelt quest to learn more about these astounding men. But the author's drive and determination to stay true to authenticity is what drove me to the end of the book. It was a brilliant journey, one that I will happily reread again in the near future.

I quite enjoyed the journey the Author took me on, as we waded through History, Legend and Myth in a search for the fate of Jesus' disciples. From my youth, I have always "wished" that Luke had given us more info about what happened to them - even with Paul at the end of Acts, we have him under house arrest and still carrying on his ministry.I also enjoyed how the Author frequently relates some of the more colourful "acts" that are written in various Apocryphal and Pseudepigraphical works - and I also appreciated the fairness with which he treated many of these works.It would've be nice to have a few more chapters (or a followup book) that covered people such as James (the brother of Christ), Mary (the mother of Christ), Barnabas, Luke, John Mark, Apollos, etc...This book is well referenced and indexed - which I always like :)

As a Bishop whose specialty is ecclesiology, I've read several books about the historical Apostles.Out of all I've read and referenced, this text is one of the best.The format and structure of the material is presented in a manner which balances narrative and reference. It's both a handbook and a story.The scholarship is wonderful with an abundance of citations.

About the Author

Alan Watts is best known as an interpreter of Zen Buddhism in particular and of Indian and Chinese philosophy in general. He earned the reputation of being one of the most original and unfettered philosophers of the twentieth century. He was the author of more than twenty books, including The Way of Zen, The Wisdom of Insecurity, The Meaning of Happiness, Psychotherapy East and West, The Book, This Is It, The Joyous Cosmology, In My Own Way, and Tao, the Watercourse Way (with Chungliang Al Huang). This book is everything I hoped it would be. My husband and I are huge Alan Watts fans. We are so grateful to his daughters for putting these letters together!

I am a big Alan Watts fan, he’s my favorite old dead zen hippy! I don’t know what I expected from this book, given it’s a series of letters he wrote to his parents, compiled by his family, starting when he was a young man. It is interesting to read how he describes cutting his “spiritual teeth” with his various teachers. His descriptions of life in NY with his wife and child in the 1930’s is also interesting. My grandmother and her sister attended Juliard in the late 1920’s, were there for the crash on 1929, and it let me imagine what their lives were like during that time. As an adult, I asked them what it was like to be in NYC during the crash and they said they didn’t know, as in it didn’t affect them so much, because they “didn’t take a paper.” Ah the innocent obvious! I get that same feel from the author as he’s describing his experiences and trying to stay positive with his parents during WWII. Having listened to several of his recordings, I love how he teaches and his writing style as well. I haven’t quite finished the book yet and I’m hoping that it becomes more infused with his teachings.

This is a must have for a Watts fan. Two of his daughters have done a fine job putting this together. It's a bit of his life that we get a front row seat for. Having read his many books, listened to his audio archives both from cd collections and from YouTube I find it hard to read w/o hearing his voice, and his laugh. It's a cross section of his entire life through his surviving letters.

Alan's daughters did us ALL a great service by sharing these letters.

Awesome. A must read for new and old Watts fans. A great glimpse into the man behind the fan fare.

Alan Watts was one of the greatest men to have ever lived

For the most part I grew up in the 60's in the San Francisco Bay Area. I remember hearing about him from a fellow high school student at Mt. Diablo High School in Concord. I listened to him a few times on the radio as well. But I really didn't get him, let alone It. The summer before my Junior year at Diablo my dad bought a farm in Missouri and off I went. In 1970 while in the US Army stationed in Bamburg, Germany I came across a book by him, "The Book on the Taboo against Knowing Who You Are" and decided to read it. I read it in one sitting and three days later I realized that I still didn't get it by suddenly realizing It for myself. In the vernacular of Zen I had a Satori experience. Fortunately for me I had just read Alan's book and so had some preparation primarily from the perspective of Advaita for what cannot be prepared for. One cannot be alert by thinking about being alert. Truth is not a state of mind but a state of being. My mind was blown out like the birthday candle of a one year old. It would be several weeks before the smoke residue of my ego would start to burn my eyes. I fell from grace but have never forgotten that what I think is not who or what I am. That the Truth cannot be realized by grabbing on to anything but nothing. A nothing that is the root of everything. I realized the Truth by becoming the Truth. The course that can be discoursed is not the eternal Course. All anyone can do for anyone where the Truth is concerned is point with an invisible finger. Point indirectly at the most direct aspect of existence. The Truth is infinitely more subtle than any joke until one gets it for oneself. Then it becomes infinitely more obvious than anything else for there is no anything else. More subtle than water to a fish. The Truth is the Truth. I AM THAT I AM.The grace of the Truth reveals itself to those that it willeth. This though the open hearted are clearly its primary target. But at the end of the day Truth is always true to Itself. Eventually everyone that is destined to awaken will, but the sequence is top secret. True cultivation is about clearing the light inhibiting clutter from one's sense of self. About seeing that our ego is not our actual self. That we are not who or what we think we are. About seeing through the whitewash façade of the World System. The mind games most of us play in a dream state of being that take things that change to be more substantial than they are. The ego is nothing more nor less than a case of mistaken identity. An appearance, not an essence. We think we are essentially our thoughts. We think too much of thinking. This world we find ourselves in is real, but it is not Real. Not Real in the eternal sense. Only that which does not change is Real. The Tao that changes is not the eternal Tao. I and the Father are One. Not one in the numerical sense, but One in the unitive sense. But they can sometimes trigger awareness. So I speak. Thus neither purist Advaita nor Dvaita are Absolutely True for both are relative concepts the product of the World System's Mind. Truth is beyond any true statement. There are no lines of demarcation in Nature, rather, there are merely areas of confluence. Nothing Real exists separate from the Real. Within Yin is the seed of Yang. Yin and Yang are not opposites, they are opposite non-opposites. Two seemingly separate ends of the same string theory. It is to the underlying unity of this or that that It is found. The Truth does not come by thinking about it, but by letting go of everything one thinks so that one can be what one already and always has been. Spirit for lack of a better word. Only the Truth is the Truth for there is no other Truth, otherwise it would not be the Truth but merely another truth. The only way to know the Truth is to know that one is the Truth. And the only way to know this is to be the Truth. Not to become the Truth, but to realize one already is the Truth. To recognize a Buddha one must be a Buddha. External polarities must first be grounded in Internal Unity. The sun rises in the East everyday. Truth flows to Itself because there is no where it is not already. Whether in this life or another the Truth will win out because it has already won out. John the Baptist was not like Elijah, he was Elijah. The Truth is eternal. Without beginning or end. Eternity is not eternal time. It is timeless. Unspeakable.Our body/mind complex while real enough for time is not Real enough for the Eternal. The author talks about the networks which have a decisive role in informatics world. The author has a strong competence, when he explicates with the analysis of films the difference between action of humans and power of computers. After, the scenario sees how the the great multi-national agencies of informatics use the games for selecting the real choice in the life. All that would be truly interesting, if the failure of several trials didn't be negative around the consequences in the individual life of many operators. The bitcoins market wouldn't be much different by the context of Black-Scholes laws, so negative for the banks system in the times between 2000 and 2008.

What Algorithms Want reveals what's lurking under the surface of computers and the Internet. It's about how computer users' collective approval powers the Internet, how Bitcoin works, how film critics and other reviewers are being replaced by curators, and why the shows we watch on Netflix aren't really our choice! The author delves deep into new levels of the digital world that you never saw coming, beyond machine code, to a weird and scary place. But it's the place where we all work and play! Loved it!

Ed’s book is an interesting examination into how the machines and systems we have created are now influencing our behaviors and society at large. I recommend to anyone looking to for insight on how the digital is effecting the analog, in both positive and negative ways.(Great job, cousin Ed :-)

Fantastic. Definitely not a terribly "practical" text (which is not a problem), but if you're into theory, and are trying to conceptualize the changes that algorithmic texts are bringing to the table, you pretty much have to read this.

I listened to a library audio version of the book -- which is probably considerably more difficult to do than reading the text versions, given Mr. Finn's embellished, somewhat excited writing style. He is quite enthusiastic about the IT/programming/computational field, but, then again, so are many (most?) of its participants. My adult life overlaps the time immediately before, and long after, the major growth periods of the personal CPU and Internet industries so I was able to watch what the industries basically accomplished in real time; i.e., automate and consolidate much (not all, by any means) of the every day tasks/every day activities that people have previously carried out much more laboriously and individually, with much replication of effort. That's pretty much it -- and that's great and quite useful (labor- and time-saving), but it is not as grand and imaginatively generative as Mr. Finn and the 'Titans of Technology' make it out to be. Individual insight, imagination, and problem-solving ability have in no way yet been supplanted by algorithm automation. Algorithms established through human observation, imagination, and insight -- efficient or inefficient -- are what people do (follow) and always have done (followed). Computers have just centralized much of this work and non-work activity, and thus reduced its short-term cost to the individual. (So far, however, overall net economic productivity hasn't seen that much of a boost from this algorithm automation, so possibly the benefits of the computer age innovations are largely being diverted towards relatively non-productive uses like entertainment and self-grooming. See the bandwidth used by Netflix users, as reported by Mr. Finn.)

What Algoriths Want describes the power of computerized algorithms in our Internet+ Age; a time, beginning in the 21st century, in which the Internet plus (+) attendant software (algorithms, the cloud, Google, etc.) and hardware (computers, smartphones, sensors, etc.) dominate all aspects of life. Finn tells us not to fear or worship the algorithm but rather to see it as “a new player, collaborator, and interlocutor” and use the algorithm and other Internet+ Age technologies for change and betterment. In my view, that’s good advice.I’ve given What Algorithms Want 4 stars rather than 5 because, consistent with the scientific/biological foundations of all things human Biosociology: Bridging the Biology-Sociology Divide, only mothers “love” their newborns; otherwise the human species would not, could not, continue. No one else “loves” anybody else--and no one “loves” a book or any other thing. "Hate" should also be removed from Amazon’s book rating scale. No one should “hate” anything or anybody. No Enemies, No Hatred: Selected Essays and Poems

A must-read for anyone (college level or beyond) interested in the pervasive power and accompanying "mythologies" of the "Computer Age." It is written across disciplines and is, therefore, equally accessible to those in the Humanities and the Sciences. A great contribution to the growing conversation about our computer-driven world!
