On Press: The Liberal Values That Shaped the News, by Matthew Pressman

Review

“The stories behind the stories are often more interesting than the stories themselves. On Press is the ultimate story behind all the stories. In tracing the evolution of news over the past half century, Matthew Pressman has produced an account that’s deeply historical and not a little troubling. In an age when the press is alternately villain or hero, Pressman serves as a kind of medicine man of journalism, telling us how we got from there to here and warning us what must change.”―Graydon Carter, former editor of Vanity Fair“Matthew Pressman helps us understand how we came to our current, troubled media moment with his deeply researched, engagingly written history of America’s press in the 1960s and ’70s. This is an important and original contribution―and a needed one.”―Margaret Sullivan, media columnist for the Washington Post“My prayers for a new way to think about the so-called crisis over ‘trust’ in the press have been answered thanks to media scholar Matthew Pressman’s erudite new history…Pressman’s framing helps explain President Donald Trump’s broadsides against what he calls the ‘fake news’ and why measurements of trust in the news profession decline almost every time Gallup fires up a new poll.”―Jack Shafer, Politico“Pressman details…the competing pressures [that] forced journalists to fundamentally recalibrate their work, reconsidering in turn core values like objectivity…[As] Pressman argues, it was a once-in-a-century sea change that both ushered in journalism as it’s understood today and foreshadowed the press corps’ current predicament.”―David Uberti, The Nation“Pressman shows…there was a purpose behind the old ideas of ‘objectivity’ and ‘fairness.’ At their best, journalists examine questions of genuine importance and offer citizens a chance to hear competing arguments on various sides of the issues at stake. This task includes pointing out when claims are at odds with the facts.”―E. J. Dionne, Jr., Washington Post“[A] really smart, trenchant look at the way that the news media has changed…Remarkable.”―Natalia Petrzela, Past Present podcast“I very much recommend [On Press]…It’s about the rise of explanatory reporting, the changeover from journalism as really a kind of stenography, where they’re just reprinting speeches and press releases…to more interpretive reporting…Really terrific.”―Ezra Klein, Ezra Klein Show“Well-researched, lucid, and engaging, On Press helps us understand attitudes toward the mass media (and, especially, financially strapped and embattled newspapers) in the Age of Trump.”―Glenn C. Altschuler, Psychology Today“Something dramatic changed in American journalism between 1960 and 1980, claims Matthew Pressman. Instead of just a bald catalogue of what politicians and officials were doing and saying, news coverage…began to reflect a distinctive set of values…On Press explores this decisive liberal turn and its enduring impact down to today.”―Times Higher Education“An original, deeply researched, and engaging examination of the fundamental changes in American journalism from the 1960s up to the rise of the digital. An indispensable work.”―Michael Schudson, author of Why Journalism Still Matters

In On Press, the aptly named Matt Pressman puts his finger on an epochal transformation of America's fourth estate over the second half of the twentieth century. In that time, he argues, the press went from acting essentially as a stenographer for the powers that be, to serving as both detective and critic—as an afflicter of the comfortable. Pressman's elegant and lucid prose belies the painstaking research that went into the book—one gets the impression he read every column of every edition of every newspaper ever, yet the insight he distills from it is crystal clear and highly convincing. And it goes a long way toward explaining our current attitudes about the media, particularly our assumptions about its supposed liberal bias.

An essential book for anyone who wants to understand the evolution of newspapers in the late 20th century. Yes, there have been memoirs, but Pressman is special - young, a rigorous researcher, a fine writer, and an outsider to the LA Times and NY Times who brings a fresh eye to the issues and key players. As a former NY Times reporter I found his deep dives into the papers of former editors and writers nothing short of astonishing.

For those of you looking for a book, you will not be disappointed as On Press has all the tell-tale signs of a book. Front and back covers? Check. Title, subtitle, and author? Check. Reputable publisher logo on the spine? Check. But if you take a look closer inside, you will find words on pages, punctuation, a thesis and supporting arguments – even page numbers. It is, indeed a book. If you were looking for a new vacuum cleaner, this is NOT the product for you. For that, you may wish to try the Dyson Ball Multifloor. For $249.99, you can’t find a better floor cleaning product. But if you are looking for a book – and, specifically, a book about the media – then you should buy this product.

This informative and insightful book by Matthew Pressman really helped me understand how news reporting and analysis have changed in recent decades. Pressman explains the critical role that independent media play in bringing to the public accurate reporting about our country's leaders and their policies. The book is not a political diatribe, nor is it overly academic. Its analysis is incredibly well documented, referencing previously private letters and memos from newspaper editors and publishers, which show how they were affected by and responded to the stormy events and political movements from the 1960's to the present. So glad it's here now at this particularly important time.

At a time when the media are under such attack, Matthew Pressman's book On Press, published by Harvard University Press, documents in very readable form how the major newspapers have changed since the 1950's and 1960's from being mouthpieces for the political establishment to being independent and critical voices, in the best tradition of the freedom of the press guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Impressive work and fascinating read exploring the factors which influence when, how and why the press alters conventions. Journalism's core values, business interests and politics, all within historical contexts, are topics engagingly discussed. The book goes far in explaining current controversies so it could not have be more timely. A gem!

An intriguing and enlightening account of how the world of press came to be. Rather than a dry historical recitation, this book provided surprising insights and anecdotes to depict the journey that brought us this journalistic crossroad. A great read whether you’re right, left, down the middle or elsewhere on the political spectrum. Highly recommend!

Thanks to Matt Pressman for writing a book that addresses a really important issue: when, how, and why did the elite American media adopt an adversarial attitude toward the powerful people they cover? "On Press" is also a pleasure to read.

Review

"Anne Brigman was...one of only two members of Alfred Stieglitz’s Photo-Secession from west of the Mississippi, exhibited at his 291 Gallery and published in his periodical Camera Work. Now she has been given a lavish revival in Ann M. Wolfe’s ANNE BRIGMAN: A Visionary in Modern Photography, [where] an undeniable tough bohemian verve is on display, drunk on willed freedom, along with a strong sense of composition and a deep reverence for the landscapes of the West." ~Luc Sante, New York Times“Anne Brigman: A Visionary in Modern Photography,” is the largest presentation of Brigman’s work to date, bringing together 250 photographs by an artist who, notes curator Ann Wolfe, was “stripping off her clothes and scaling mountains at a time when women were still confined to Edwardian corsets." — AI AP

I discovered Anne Brigman twenty something years ago. I love early pictorialism photography but there is a quality of her work that is compelling and haunting. Her hit parade of images showed up regularly in books of the aforementioned topic or sometimes in symbolist books. I looked for any information on her I could find and was disappointed at how little was available. There was the random book that was so rare that the price made it out of reach and I was resigned to knowing little else of her other than her excursions to the Sierras to shoot self portraits in rugged and breathtaking settings. This book is the answer to a decades old dream; not only are there scores of images I have never seen before, but ones I never even knew existed. The icing on the cake is the inclusion of her book of poetry which is ultra-obscure. These are boxed beautifully together which makes opening the set a gift in itself. The layout is stunning and there are actually repeats of images which normally would seem redundant, but in this instance is validating as a point of reference to the text. The writers were obviously chosen for their knowledge and appreciation of Brigman and there are significant instances drawn with contemporary artists who were inspired or impacted by her work in some way. I read through the text ravenously, gorging myself on the information of the many questions i’ve pondered over the years; her personal story, where she lived, travelled, her relationship with Stieglitz and was not disappointed. As I had hunched, she was a very complex, highly creative and intelligent, soulful artist, passionate about nature and the human spirit. A exemplary Californian maverick like the bohemian gang she ran with, devoted to her family and her work. So rewarding that the enigmatic figure that fascinatined me for years proved to be everything I hoped she would be. Am grateful for this book

This was one of the most beautiful presentations of an artist that I've purchased. It arrived in a stunning box with the artists work on the cover. It opens to reveal poetry and a very large book of Anne Brigman's photographs. I wanted to learn more about her work and this is the place to do it. Well curated and put together. The images are large and beautiful. Underneath the large book of works is another bonus - a small book dedicated to Anne's poetry. I am excited to go through all of it and would highly recommend this collection if you are interested in learning about Anne and her pioneering photography.

I didn’t expect such an amazing production when I purchased a book. It is more than a book. It’s a work of love about a beautiful adventurous artistic moment that I adore.

This is a gorgeous book and it is presented in a beautiful manner!

Wonderful work.

I first read smoky when I was in my early 20's. I had a first edition paperback that a housemate stole from me. And I have spent years and years looking for another copy. Every bookstore tried to tell me the book didn't exist. But when I was up in Montana, i found another book by will James, and that publisher had it listed as available from them. So I looked it up under used books, and bought myself a new copy.SMOKY THE COW HORSE has always been one of my all time favorites.

Smoky: The Cow Horse was one of my favorite books as a child. this is the original edition that a sibling stole and tossed - - and now in my sixties it was a treat to receive this again with the cover and inside photos I loved for so many years. It was great to re-read this treasure!

I first read this book as a young teen who was madly stricken with "horse fever"...I loved it then and I find the nostalgia that it brings refreshing. The illustrations are fantastic. This man, Will James, knew horses, well. He knew their behavior and their anatomy.

Written by a cowboy. The horse was as important as a car today. Will Rogers said Will James book offers in a accurate account of the role the horse played in the success and/ survival of a cowboy. One of my all time favorite books.

Completely enjoyed this book. Draw'ns in the book come up real small on this Kindle, but that dosen't take away from the story at all. Recommend this book to all, young and old alike.

Excellent service and an old favorite book I loved as a very young person. It is good to re-read a much-loved book from my past. It is in good condition and arrived in an appropriate time frame.

A great book on the life of a cowhorse. The good, bad and the ugly. A very touching story to the end. A great book for adolescence.

I read this book when I was a 10 year old boy, and it was a superb book. We bought the book for our nine year old granddaughter who is very much into horses, riding, and competition. She loves the story.
