The Legend of Old Befana: An Italian Christmas Story, by Tomie dePaola

Review

"In a tale based on Italian legend, first published in 1980 and here reissued, Old Befana spends her days baking and sweeping her house and front steps. When a splendid procession led by the three Wise Men passes by, a boy invites her to come along to Bethlehem to meet the Baby King.... DePaola’s ink and watercolor illustrations use flowing lines and glowing colors to propel the story and attract the eye; rustic details help define the Italian-village setting." (Horn Book Magazine, November/December 2017)

This book scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Seriously, it was so odd and scary that I used to hide it in my closet in hopes that my parents wouldn't read it to me. I don't think it's supposed to be scary, but the thought of an old witch flying around during Christmas time (instead of Santa, who I was more familiar with) was just too much for me to handle.Having said that, I bought this book as a gift for my best friend's little girl... I figure, I turned out okay despite the Befana traumatizing of my youth, so perhaps she will, too. They are an Italian family, so they appreciated it!

I wish there were more books about La Befana in the US; thankfully, even if this is the only one you have ~ it is a WONDERFUL book telling the Italian legend of Befana. In many ways, the story of Befana reminds me of the biblical story of Mary and Martha (Lazarus' sisters). While a guest in thier home, Mary chose to spend time with Jesus while Martha is too busy with her household chores. In The Legend Of Old Befana we meet an old woman who is constantly sweeping. When the procession of kings pass through her town and tell her of the birth of the Child King she decides to follow. She bakes all day in order to have a gift to bring for the Child. She also plans to sweep knowing that the Child's mother will be tired. However, rather than set off to find the baby Jesus, she tarries in order to sweep. Her decision to delay in favor of sweeping costs her a glimpse of the Child King. To this day, she searches for the Child, visiting children while they sleep, leaving them gifts from her basket.I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to share this celebrated Italian legend! Another EXCELLENT resource is Ken Lonnquist's CD titled Old Befana: Old Befana. You can also download the entire album in MP3 format which is cheaper and faster. It has the story of La Befana and songs.

I used this wonderful book for storytelling in my Granddaughter’s K Classroom to teach about this Italian tradition. It was very well received & I gave the delightful book as a gift to the classroom.

Bought it to help share a different version of Santa with my students. It has some vague hints of the story of the birth of christ but not enough I felt to make people uncomfortable or feel like I was introducing Christianity to their children without their approval or knowledge. Outside of that, I would say the illustrations were beautifully done, the story is easy to follow for small children and entertaining. I felt like this was a worth while purchase. it was hard to find the story in English. This is in english.

Many many years ago, one of my friends told me the story of Befana - and I fell in love with it. So when I saw this book, I thought it would be a great little book to give to my niece & nephew. I sat down to read it when I received it - and it didn't take but 3 pages to see the stories are drastically different. I have to believe that the published story is the accurate one - so I have to ask my friend where the heck she came up with or heard her version. BUT, this book is beautifully illustrated and great for kids.

I always purchase this book for all the special babies born in the families of my family and friends. Beautiful Christmas story about the search for the Christ child found in every little boy and girl.

Love this! So glad They have a book about the Befana, my mother and Nonna use to tell me stories all the time and we celebrated it every year! Now I have a book to read to my kids and keep the tradition!!!

one of my fav childrens authors ..Gave it to a new born child to an italo American family

Big Machines: The Story of Virginia Lee Burton, by Sherri Duskey Rinker John Rocco

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—A coal engine, a steam shovel, a snowplow, and a cable car are the big machines that Rinker and Rocco celebrate in the story of Virginia Lee Burton's creative life. Burton's young children, Aris and Michael, clamored for stories about big machines, so "Jinnee" responded by creating Choo Choo, Mary Anne, and the others. For readers not familiar with the stories, Rinker summarizes each over a few pages, imagining Aris and Michael's reactions. Rinker also introduces an element of wonder in the narration, describing Burton as magical and her artists' tools as wands. Rocco's illustrations help convey the magic of creation: to complete the top of Choo Choo's cab, he shows Burton climbing up the ladder that she has just sketched so that she can reach. Rocco also pays tribute to Burton's early passion for ballet by depicting her creation of the big machines as graceful full-body gestures. Elements of Burton's illustrations and attention to design appear in Rocco's art: the puff of smoke above Choo Choo's smokestack contains a visual summary of the engine's adventures. This is a lovely tribute, both to a marvelous creator of books for children as well as the creative process itself. VERDICT Recommended for most picture book biography collections.—Jennifer Costa, Cambridge Public Library, MA

Alive, bursting with color and action, this volume introduces Virginia Lee Burton to a new generation of big machine enthusiasts." —Kirkus, starred review ★ ". . . [E]nchanting portrayal of Virginia Lee Burton . . . Prime material for classroom author studies and a lively, imaginative introduction to Burton’s classic picture books." —Booklist, starred review "Burton’s fans will enjoy teasing out the visual references to her work, both in Rocco’s use of color and form (including several circular vignettes), while feeling intimately connected to how these treasured stories came into being." —Publishers Weekly "Anyone even passingly familiar with the Burton canon will appreciate Rocco’s close emulation of Burton’s work; he goes a step further, though, by casting Jinnee and the boys as players in a story done in her visual style." —Bulletin "This is a lovely tribute, both to a marvelous creator of books for children as well as the creative process itself. Recommended for most picture book biography collections." –School Library Journal "Rocco’s paintings of the artist at work and his replicas of her illustrations are masterful... Whether or not you're familiar with the classics MIKE MULLIGAN'S STEAM SHOVEL and THE LITTLE HOUSE (though if not, check them out!) you'll love this unique bio about their creator, author/illustrator Virginia Lee Burton, "Jinnee". Sherri Duskey Rinker, of bestseller GOODNIGHT GOODNIGHT CONSTRUCTION SITE fame, describes Jinnee as "magical" and it's an apt description for the entire book. The text is lyrical and lovely, offering insight without slowing down the story. And the illustrations by Caldecott-Honor winning author/illustrator of BLACKOUT, John Rocco, are gorgeous - referential but entirely his own. A wonderful classroom addition to discussions of author/illustrators, and women creators. Kids will love the big machines and the little house moving from city to country. The whole package is a stunner.

This is one of the best children's books I've ever read. It was so sweet! If you are a Virginia Lee Burton fan, then do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this book!!!!

If you love Virgina Lee Burton's books you will love this short biography of her. I appreciate how the artist gently mirrored Burton's style and brought her life's story to us all. A great first biography for kids, and a sweet, short look for adults.

Husband bought the book for our newborn. fun graphics!

Received as expected

Great book

A picture book biography of author/illustrator Virginia Lee Burton that primarily focuses on her inspiration for her books, her sons.I knew absolutely nothing about Virginia Lee Burton other than that she was an author/illustrator. It was enlightening to find out that she had two little boys obsessed with machines and that inspired her to make books about snow plows, trains, and steam shovels. It makes sense. Make sure you read the author's note in the back of the book to learn a little more about Burton. This would be a fantastic companion read for Mike Mulligan's Steam Shovel or Little House. And let's not fail to mention John Rocco's illustrations. He does an AMAZING job. He imitates Burton's illustration style so very well to show her illustrating, and then his own illustrations of Burton and her sons are beautiful and more life-like to make them stand out. Stunning art and informative back story.

Delightful! Powerful, magical, and full of life was the magical author/illustrator favorite, Virginia Lee Burton! Learn about her magical ways in this delightful biography written by Sherri Duskey Rinker, and illustrated by John Rocco! Published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.A beautiful tribute to Virginia Lee Burton.#mustread #biography #authorillustrator #VirginiaLeeBurton

I started out reading Mr. Mayne's books with The Naturalist. I was hooked. I then read its sequel. When I found that the next book in the series won't be out until next February I went looking for something else by this author. I found this book and the first in the series, The Chronological Man. So I thought I'd give it a try. What fun reads. Both are novellas so even though I couldn't put them down, they were short reads for me. They were interesting to say the least. The plot moved along and although it was resolved there are still some unanswered questions. Who is Smith really? He has a sister?! And what about April? I could use another book in this series. Seriously I could. I hope Mr. Mayne is listening. As I said this book has a good plot, interesting characters and was fun to read. What more could you ask for? If you're a Doctor Who fan you too will find this a can't put down book and even if you're not.

I will confess that I am a Mayne-iac. On my Listmania "Best Bargain Reads for the Kindle" he holds numerous spots (including #1). My love of this author began when I read Public Enemy Zero, ebbed a bid with The Grendel's Shadow, then became firmly cemented with The Chronological Man: The Monster in the Mist. I found his skill, particularly his knack at writing thoroughly captivating adventures in different and distinct genres to be first rate. It got to the point where I would often pop in on his author's page to see if he had anything new out. What a great Christmas gift it was to discover that a new Chronological Man had been released. I was eager to jump in and follow the adventures of the elusive Dr. Who/Tony Stark/Sherlock Holmes mashup that is the main character Smith; a man who lives in suspended animation only to awake when he is most needed. I was hoping to find him solving more mysteries with the use of his brilliant machines, preternatural deductions, and the ever plucky Miss April Malone. And I am happy to report I was not dissappointed.Where TMitM had more of a Steampunk vibe, this second installment fits squarely in realm of the serial adventure, the pulp or dime novel. It would not be a stretch to see Smith cross paths with The Shadow or Doc Savage or The Avenger. Mr. Mayne works this vibe brilliantly as he charges our hero with the task of saving the world from a Martian invasion he is sure is a hoax. By employing a larger landscape (19th century New York) and a cast of historical characters (Teddy Roosevelt says hi!) Mayne kicks his series into high gear. And like the serials from which he draws his inspiration, we are faced with non-stop action that will leave you breathlessly turning pages until the very satisfying conclusion.Readers new to the series may sense a lack of character development that does not fully explain the mutual attraction between Smith and Ms. Malone. They may also feel slightly lost regarding Smith's "long naps" and references to events long passed. If so shame on you. For 99 cents you should be reading both The Monster in the Mist and The Martian Emperor...back to back...now! Read together, any cracks will surely be cemented over and what will be left is a solid body of work that is so entertaining you will wish there was a donation box on Amazon so that you could support Mr. Mayne even further.Favorite quote: "You don't elevate a society by putting a diffferent set of crooks in charge to steal and put their boots on our necks. You elevate society by not putting the crooks in charge."

The Martian Emperor is the second instalment of Andrew Mayne's "The Chronological Man" series. I think readers who start with The Martian Emperor, rather than the first book in the series, The Monster in the Mist (A Chronological Man Adventure) (The Chronological Man), are going to feel lost because Mayne does not spend any time in introducing the characters - the thoroughly modern April Malone and Smith - or explaining the central conceit by which Smith seems to travel through time. Those subjects are covered in "The Monster in the Mist." In this book, all the reader can do is barely get his seatbelt fastened before being taken for a high-paced joy-ride of an adventure. It seems that it is 1894 and New York is besieged by Martians. A flying saucer of all things has appeared in New York's Central Park and the Martian Emperor wants Earthlings to lay down their arms and give him a million dollars in gold. This odd news results in Smith being decanted and Smith and his side-kick, April Malone, head off in Smith's private train to New York. Smith meets Teddy Roosevelt, who knows him of old, and seems to know more about Smith's background than he lets on, and Smith, Roosevelt and Malone set out to unravel the mystery. During the course of their adventure, they meet a young carnival performer named Harry Houdini who lends a hand. Even Nellie Bly gets a cameo. Is it a hoax? Smith smells a rat because the "Martian" artifacts are too boilerplate cliche, and, yet, it also seems that the Martians are doing things that are in advance of the technology available in the closing days of the Nineteenth Century, kind of like Smith's own technology, which involves private automated trains, lighter than air flying vehicles and automated telegraph interception devices. All in all, The Martian Emperor is a rollicking good yarn. Smith, Malone and Teddy make for engaging characters. There are some improbable scenes and good humor (e.g., "I'm commandeering your rhinoceros.") We get hints about Smith's backstory: his sick sister is making the slow journey to the future, he had conversations with "Tom" about what a just society should look like, and Smith may have a technologically advanced rival in a secret society called "the White Apothecarians."The Martian Emperor is well worth the investment of time and money.

I find this to be a difficult music book to rate. It has a lot of info that I really don't care about - like how to custom shape a reed - but I can see how it could be very interesting to the mature beginner/intermediate or maybe the serious high school age student and maybe even the college student alike. I think it is way over the head of a young beginner and may turn them off to music altogether and may be repetitious to the professional. There is not much actual music in it to play but it is more of a theory of mechanics for both instrument (reeds and such) and physical (embouchure, diaphragm, breathing and such) and the marriage of the two to create the best sound quality. Overall an interesting music book with much more than just music. Lots of information on how to produce different sound quality, vibrato, intonation, etc. This would have been a good book to have an accompanying DVD. Too bad.

This is a everything you ever wanted to know about the Sax. Way more information than I needed to learn and play the Sax. But, then I am a beginner Perhaps, for the aspiring professional musician this book wood be great It just was way over my head at this point in my Sax playing.

Arrived in very good shape as describe

If you buy One book on sax this is it. You can spend a lot more on several books and will not get the absolute coverage this book delivers.I played for 5 years in junior high and high school. After a 50 year lay off...yep 50...decided to start back and having a blast.

Larry Teal gets down and dirty with eyeball-popping detail to tell you what to do and what not to do when you pick up a horn. If you've ever wondered what those mysterious rockers are doing down there by your right index finger, or if you've ever asked yourself what to call the inside parts of the mouthpiece, you've come to the right place.Teal reveals the science behind getting a great tone: it's all about supporting a column of air. More importantly, he'll give you embouchure exercises that will have you grinning and puckering all day. You'll love his Mr. Musclehead illustrations to see what's really behind that smile.I especially enjoyed the part about how to improve your sound by DIY reed shaving, one of the lost arts of the Aztecs. And the mysterious altissimo range is demystified with clear fingering charts.A very useful book for beginners and old-timers alike. I've been playing for 25 years and I found the book an inspiration that has helped improve the quality of my practice sessions.

Everything you need to know about the most important aspects of saxophone playing to get started on the right track. Could be a beginner's bible and all saxophone players guide book.

Every sax player needs to own this book. It's well written in simple enough language for a high school student to understand. All topics related to playing sax are covered in concise, accurate descriptions. This is my second copy as my first was falling apart from lots of use! It's also quite a good value at this price. Highly recommended- practically worth its weight in gold for the value of the information contained.

The information in this book was derived from the 50's, and makes references to that time period. But don't let that stop you. Good information is just that, and will always remain viable no matter the date. Master this one, and you're well on your way to bigger and better things.
