As a young person, I had both of the two three-volume Civil War treatises by Bruce Catton. I read them many times and wish I still had them. This single volume, This Hallowed Ground, is easy to read, is succinct, and yet is comprehensive in its scope. Catton gives the reader a close look into the attitudes, opinions, thoughts, and feelings of the soldiers and the civil populous of the Civil War era. He does this through annotated quotes and citations, but without losing the readability of the story. It is a wonderful read for anyone with an interest in the American Civil War.

Despite being nearly 60 years old, this is still one of the best popular histories of the Civil War available. In great part, that's due to the timeless, masterful writing style of Bruce Catton. His use of language to paint a picture or evoke an intellectual and emotional response from the reader is unmatched (though Shelby Foote and James McPherson come remarkably close.) This book describes battles, but if you're looking for battle-action reports detailing the movements of the Iron Brigade or Stonewall Brigade, or the heroic stand of the 20th Maine at Little Round Top, you won't find them here. Instead, Catton puts the battles into the perspective of an entire campaign, and discusses not only the campaigns, but the social, political and economic environments in which they occurred. As a result, many decisions that, by themselves, appear ill-considered are suddenly understandable when placed in the overall context of the conflict. I have always been a particular fan of Catton's way of describing how slavery is inextricably woven into the fabric of the war: it may not have been the direct, overt, stand-alone cause of the war, but it was at the root of all the other causes: preserving a way of life that at its root was stained with immorality; states rights (in the South Carolina declaration of secession, they gave as a justification New York's exercise of state's rights when it refused to enforce the fugitive slave act - South Carolina felt the federal government should force the state to enforce it), and the collision of the agrarian economy with the industrial economy. He then links this complex national tragedy into the civil rights struggles of the 1950's and 1960's; since the book was written in the midst of these struggles, their outcome was not yet certain - and, as he explains, may not be certain for several more generations. He succeeds, as no other writer on the Civil War has, in lifting the story of the conflict from something consigned to the dusty halls of history, into a living, breathing part of the modern American experience. When you're ready for more detail, Catton wrote other books, including a trilogy about the Army of the Potomac, a trilogy about the entire Civil War, and a masterful trilogy about Ulysses S. Grant (he assisted Lloyd Lewis with the first volumen, then wrote the remaining two volumes himself - I believe Mr. Lewis may have died shortly after the first volume was finished?) All of his writing rises to the same level of quality.

This is a grand summary of the battle of Gettysburg! I have read much on Gettysburg yet got so many new facts and insights to this epic event. I had it on my bucket list to stand on Little Round Top and imagine what the men there faced. Now that has been superseded by the desire to see another spot, just as dramatic yet more tragic - the place where the 262 men of the 1st Minnesota charged into 1500 Confederates threatening to break the union line thus saving the day and probably the battle. I now understand how haphazard war/combat was/is. Very sobering account - well written, concise, informative, inspiring. You can knock it out in a short 2 evenings reading.

The best single volume history of the Civil War I've ever read.I've read a number of books on the Civil War - Shelby Foote's tour-de-force, for example - and all have been excellent. But for someone who wants a comprehensive and extremely readable overview of the war, delivered with the gut-wrenching perspective of the common soldier caught up in the horrific, nightmarish slaughter, which was the essence of this most tragic of all our nation's conflicts, Bruce Catton's "This Hallowed Ground" is simply without peer.

A great read for someone who has never read anything about the Civil War (like myself). Catton did a great job of making the history interesting and I will definitely read more by him. Highly recommended if you are looking for a great dive into American history.

As usual, Bruce Catton brings life to the story of the Civil War. This isn't a history of the tactics or strategy but rather a history of the perseverence of the human spirit in the worst of times. It's educational as well as entertaining and only Catton can breath life into the ordinary men caught in extraordinary circumstances.

His Civil War Trilogy, The Army of Potomac, is Not To Be Missed! He won a Pulitzer for the darn thing, for Pete's sake, and yet it still isn't available in Kindle yet! Only the 3rd book, of the trilogy is available, and I am scratching my head. Why is Foote available, and not Catton? Is there a conspiracy here?Catton has an ability to take you into the times, and help you to feel what what was going on from an everyday social, historical point of view. You get the view from the men in the trenches, and you understand what motivated them. He has a gift for the kinds of details that bring history to life, in a way that the common man can relate to. And his writing flows, so that he makes it difficult to put his books down. I have read and REread his books, just because he is SUCH a great writer, and not because I so terribly interested in the subject. I read him because I'm interested in people, and I'm interested in the nature of mankind, and so is Catton, and he makes a careful observation of character. So I love him, and I am DYING to see his entire Pulitzer Prize winning Trilogy published in Kindle form. I don't know what the hold up is. But in the meantime, read ANYTHING by Catton! He's a GEM!

I cant affort to get all the card I would like and this is a good second choice on the original cards

Great book

I had forgotten that this was issued back in the latter 1980s but Topps and the publisher did a wonderful job of organizing and capturing every single card issued in this era by the company. It brought back floods of memories and it would take years of collecting at massive dollar amounts to be able to see this much of my childhood captured so intensely and succinctly. I truly enjoy it!

excellent book thanks great service

This book provides a card sized photo(in color) of each Topps football card made during the 1956-1986 time period. The book also provides statistics for each player at the back of the book. This is a nice table book, and item for conversation, and an excellent book for those who were young when these players were part of the NFL.

Very satisfied customer

It was exactly what I expected as a used library book, The condition was very good and the binding was still intact.

If you are a football fan or card collector this book is for you. Many beautiful pictures of cards of the past. When they played for the love of the game and worked in the off season for money.
