I wish I had read the one and two star reviews before purchasing this edition, as a gift for someone else. Glad I looked at it before sending. It is not a direct translation, rather it appears to be heavily edited and paraphrased, weakening some of the qualities that drew me to Brother Lawrence's work in the first place. This should be clearly disclosed in the item description. Very disappointing.

When I went to the seminary this was a book one of my professors recommended so I got it and read through it in a couple of hours and was amazed at how in-depth this book is for as small as it is. The first time I read this book was in 1993 and I have read it at least once a year since then. Sometimes I have misplaced the tiny paperback and get upset when I can't find it. I was really pleased when this came out for the kindle and I was able to get it for free. If you are a spiritual person you will want to read this book and believe me it is a quick read and very enlightening. If you put the practices of Brother Lawrence to work in your own spiritual life you will experience a deeper commitment and understanding of God. I recommend this book to people of all ages and suggest that if you have read it once read it again. Every time I read it I find a new jewel of wisdom I can grab onto and grow closer to God.

Every single paragraph has a priceless nugget just waiting to be picked up. The best $4 purchase of my life! Buy a copy for a friend!! Buy a copy to hand to a stranger!!! Slip a $20 bill into a copy and hand it to the next homeless person you encounter!!!! An excerpt: "...often calls men blind, complaining that we are content with too little. God has infinite treasures to give us, he says. Why should we be satisfied with a brief moment of worship? With such meager devotion, we restrain the flow of God's abundant grace. If God can find a soul filled with a lively faith, He pours His grace into it in a torrent that, having found an open channel, gushes out exuberantly. We often stop this torrent by our lack of respect for it. However, we mustn't restrain it any longer. Let us go into our hearts, dear friend, breaking down the dike, making way for grace, and making up for lost time! You and I are getting along in years. We may have little time left to live. Death is always near, so be prepared, for we only die once."

Actually, I was quite disappointed with this book. I had given my previous copy of Brother Lawrence's writing to someone and then was wishing I had another copy for myself so I ordered this. As it turned out, this one isn't the same as what I had before. Many of the passages I had written down from the previous copy simply weren't in this one. It was as though the content had been de-personalized. I would suggest going with a different version, if you can find one.

This is a classic that I hadn't read before. But I'm glad that I read it now. Brother Lawrence doesn't advocate anything that is complicated, which I believe we too often try to make being in God's presence. Instead, there's a beauty in the simplicity of the practices he advocates. It's not a long read, but it's definitely good.

In this simple little book Brother Lawrence shows us the way of a viable path to God. Considering God as our nearest and dearest friend, we talk to Him in the language of our heart. We walk with God wherever we are, whatever we are doing. Some people prefer to think of God as The Absolute, without form. While this is true, most of the great mystic traditions and religions encourage us to develop a personal relationship with God, as we are by our human nature relational. We live in a world that is revved up; stealing our time and attention with a myriad problems. The common conviction is that we can buy our way out of our limitations. One way out is to inwardly keep our consciousness with The Unlimited, our Best Ally and Friend. I believe if one follows Brother Lawrence's path with great sincerity, it is all one will ever need to do.

Love the content! I had this book before and really liked it. This new one however has a ton of typos and it flows in such a weird way, very distracting to read. I recommend buying from a different publisher.

In the din and bustle of life, it is easy to forget that God is always with us. Brother Lawrence discovered a way to sustain his awareness of God's presence and shares with us how each person can abide with God in every moment. May God bless you in reading this book and may we have the courage and discipline to practice the presence of God.

This is really a story of friendship--the friendship between an artist and his inspiration, which can be a fickle thing. But the message (that being playful, lighthearted, and appreciative always brings our inspiration back) is clear, and a good one for a child or adult of any age to receive. I've given this as a gift to kids and also to grown-up artists, and it's always a hit. Who doesn't love a hat wearing a dog? The book is downright enchanting, as are all D.B. Johnson's books. I would frame every beautifully colored illustration, if its magic weren't in motion: the acetate pages in between each regular page alter the illustrations and make reading this book a dynamic experience.

The Surrealist world of Rene Magritte finds a new home in a genteel between-the-wars city populated by domestic animals, including a namesake dog who happens to be a painter. Magritte buys a hat that floats above his head, and the experience improves both his life and his art. The illustrations, carefully evoking the style of Rene Magritte, make references to many of his most important works--so much so, that you have to go through it a few times before you can be fairly sure you spotted them all (or, true to the Surrealist spirit, until the illusion overtakes you that you've done so).The book is a delightful way to bring Modern art to children. My three-year-old boy has me read the book to him over and over. Parents--you know what that means: you've got a winner here. My son always calls out, "The hat came back!" at the appropriate moment in the story, and he shouts out again to announce when Magritte has made it back home after the adventure that drives the plot.This is the most original children's book I've read in years, and I recommend it to all parents who want to find a fun way to lead their children onto a journey of discovery of Modern art.

Marvelous is the word for this book! It is funny. It rewards careful study of the illustrations. It promotes an appreciation of Magritte and his fellow surrealists. It has a great message about appreciation, and maintaining balance in our lives. And did I mention it is funny, too? It is a great all round package, which will be enjoyed by readers from age three thru adults. Definitely worth adding to the permanent collection.

I bought this as a gift for a 6-year old boy. He was thrilled! He said he had never seen anything like it before & was so excited about the story & the transparent overlays. He kept running around showing everyone. This book is delightful for adults as well as children - it is charmingly written, beautifully illustrated, & very magical & unusual in the way it's presented.

This book has been a big hit at home. Love the illustration, the story, the transparent overlay pages, and the general sense of mystery and creativity that it conveys. Pardon the cliche, but this is also one of those books that will be a hit equally with kid readers and adults. I've enjoyed the playful approach to Magritte's work.

This book has superb images based on work by the painter Magritte, presented as a funny story of a hat that travels withthe artist. The book is really enjoyable for the parents and the children and helps them get started learning about andappreciating art at a very young age. It is a book they will love for many years.

I love this book. It is clever and beautiful. My four year old loves it also. We read it a lot and it is in her regular rotation.

This book is truly wonderful! The story is imaginative and beautifully drawn with some clear plastic pages that add to the story and are sure to interest young and old alike.

My husband loves to kyack through the Pine Barrens. This book gave him more information about where to go and what to look for. He loved it.

Although the fast paced development of this area makes a guide such as this very difficult to keep updated and current, this was a much needed revision to the original guides. The history, obstacles, maps & charts, launch & rental sites, approximate paddling times, and grades for each river make this guide ideal for both canoeists and kayakers. Listings for Pinelands preservation and conservation organizations are also included so those who treasure these rivers can support the cause. If you are paddling in NJ, you won't want to miss at least one of the Pine Barren Rivers and this is the guide you will need.

DK always produces quality Guides. I have always valued their Backpacking Guides and now this beautiful Guide to Costa Rica. I have found this guide to be the most informative and useful of the guides I have used. It is my 1st choice by far! It may not go into the depth of some other Guides about a specific place, like Frommers or Fodor or the nitty gritty of off the beaten trail like Lonely Planet and others, but it gives you a wonderful overview of the country and the full color pictures jump out at you. They give you a taste of what to expect, that just words can not. The 3D drawings of places in San Jose and the Central valley are really most helpful in understanding what you will be seeing and experiencing. This guide introduces you to the essence of this beautiful country. I found the maps give you a great sense of where things are. Be sure to check out this guide before making your final selection of a Costa Rica Guide.

Typically I love DK travel guides. I much prefer reading the descriptions and seeing photos of the sites and locations. This one is just too high level though. The descriptions are very brief and lacking detail. The Rick Steves Italy 2015 book is much better -- but no pictures.I also have the DK Tuscany book and its much more detailed. I've used the DK books for other trips -- Greece, Norway, and a few others, and thought they were good. The italy book though is just not detailed enough -- they should've just made it a larger book or just stuck to the regional books.

I love the Eyewitness Travel Guide series but they generally suffer from certain limitations and the New Zealand guide is no exception. It starts off with the standard historical chapter before getting to an area-by-area description and summary of both islands that form the country. This is where the book shines because it offers color photos on every page that are invaluable in helping you decide which sights are must-see and which ones you can skip if you are short on time. As you would expect, every region is covered, from Auckland in the north down to Stewart Island in the far south. All of the major attractions are covered although perhaps not as comprehensively as you might like.Next, come the sections on hotels, shopping, restaurants, and other practical needs. These sections are not as comprehensive as you'll see in some other guides such as Frommer's New Zealand (Frommer's Complete). And this really is what it comes down to. The Eyewitness guides are not as detailed as most of the other guide books. They are, however, the only series to offer hundreds of color photos to help you visualise your trip and this is an invaluable planning tool. I highly recommend that you buy this guide as well as one of the more detailed books and use them both to plan your trip. That's the only way to get everything you need to plan a great vacation.

Pros:- Nice pictures- Many suggestions for every locationCons:- Not up-to-date: as a glaring example, in this book, Arenal is still smoking (it stopped in 2010).- Not judgmental enough: all 30 volcanoes are equally fascinating (but what should you do if you have time just for one?), you can spend a week in San Jose (in fact it's a dump, and you want to get out of there as soon as possible), and everything and everywhere is amazing. As a tourist, you want a guidebook that will also tell you what you can skip and what's not worth your time.Summary: this is a good 2nd book if you have a primary book like James Kaiser's Costa Rica guide (my top recommendation.)

I already have an older copy of the DK Guide. This copy was purchased for a friend. The book is a stunning pictorial of the most beautiful county in the world. Their photos, maps and cross section drawings of buildings are amazing in their accuracy. Their descriptions of sites and cities are engaging and engrossing. There is only one problem with the book. They make no attempt to quantify the value of seeing a particular city or site. For those of us with a limited amount of time and money to spend in a foreign country, we need to be very selective about what to see and how we budget our time. For that critical element, I rely on Rick Steves travel recommendations. I feel it is essential to have both books. Rick Steves will help you navigate the travel and custom differences and get you to what is most important to see, and DK Eyewitness will guarantee that you do not miss the important details of the site.

We just returned from a trip to New Zealand and this DK Eyewitness Travel Guide was ideal. It gives all the highlights with enough detail to help you to decide what to do or see, and what not to miss. It is helpful to read before your go when planning your trip, and a valued reference guide once you are in a particular place. New Zealand is beautiful and quite fascinating. There are vast differences between the South Island and the North Island and this guide brings each into focus. It also provides the history of this country, which is fascinating and important to understand as this land is particularly isolated. We hope to go back to New Zealand next year, and we will definitely take this guide with us. It offers suggestions for day hikes and longer treks through the southern Alps, new experiences to try in Queenstown the "Adventure Capitol" where bungy jumping was invented, wine tasting opportunities throughout the country, and interesting walks through the beautiful cities such as Christ Church. In general, we are fans of DK Eyewitness Guides because they not only provide great descriptions of places of interest, but they are also very good at restaurant and hotel description and recommendations. They provide an accurate price range, and apt descriptions of the food and ambiance. We have been using these guides for over 15 years, when we travel abroad, and have found that we can always rely on the information contained within them. We find the history of each place, the timelines of events, the color graphics, maps and photographs to be user-friendly, very helpful and engaging.

This is a very solid and sound book. I have read well over 30 poker books and I like the way she thinks through hands. Not only did I read it once, I referred back to it a few times over the last year. I'm really writing this review because most of the 1 star reviews are irresponsible and I wanted to reply. If you read the 1 star reviews you will notice a few things. First, most of them did not read the book. Second, most of them are angry at her brother and simply wrote an angry comment. Also, most of the comments are completely meritless. Several reviews said that she is not qualified to write a poker book because she does not win. This is incorrect. Annie Duke has won over $4,000,000 in poker tournaments and cashed over 40 times. If this is not winning, I want this level of failure. One of the 1 star reviews is clearly just a promotion for 2 plus 2 books. He not only complained about this book, he managed to complain about all of the Gordon books as well. One of the reviewers actually tried to claim that all 75 five-star reviews must be fake. So this one mean that got 75 people that live in different places to write long and detailed reviews (some over 300 words) that are all fake. What seems more realistic, that 75 people are lying or that 12 people that gave the book a bad review have their own agenda's. I don't know Annie, but I would really hate if my work was insulted because of something my brother was involved with. If you are a low to mid level player you will get some good ideas from this book. Its worth the price. It's not perfect, but I have gotten a lot out of it and I have definitely applied things I learned in this book to my game.

This is a very good theory book. She is dead on with the way she thinks the hands through. Very complete in her teaching. Plan on reading it more than once to comprehend it all. Im on my 5th time through it myself. I've read MANY poker books by multiple famous author's and her advice is as good if not better than any. The only complaint I have is that it gets very boring. I know she isn't in the book business per say, but the first time I read it and everytime since I find my mind wandering during the middle areas of the book. I put it down and come back later. If your looking for a solid how to play book this is it. But if you have a short attention span to dry reads your gonna struggle with it.

The book itself is a great and possibly fresh perspective on how to approach your betting, calling, raising, and bluffing. It involves reading the situation, rather than the cards. It helps you determine not what to bet, but what that bet represents, and if the bet is justified in math and in your strategy for that hand.Bonus for Audible: narrated by Annie Duke herself!

I had read this book before, reading bits and pieces here and there. I thought I was applying it in my play, but I was doing it totally incorrectly and - more importantly - inconsistently. However, I knew enough to recognize that there was something there that was missing from my game that I hadn't learned from the many other poker books I've read.So - in order to try to really learn it, I downloaded the audiobook version and started listening every day during my commute. I am now into my third listen, and I'm still learning and getting better. My tournament results have sky-rocketed, helped no doubt by a healthy dose of winning races in key spots. This audiobook has paid for itself about 400-500X by my estimate.However - and WAY more importantly - I am 1000% more comfortable at the table and positive of the moves I make. This confidence is contagious and helps me to project a much more scary table image and get way more respect. No longer am I picked on as the weak-tight fish just hoping to make it into the money. I recently won my first tourney in the local card room, and one of the players in the final 3 told me "I had a feeling early on that it would be me and you in it to the end."This book had not only made me a better poker player, but it's made me a happier poker player. Now that is a good poker book.

Worth the read after you have been playing poker for a while. The next step toward improving your game. But don't read this book if you have no idea about Texas Hold em and certainly no understanding of the winning hands. This is not poker 101 but your senior grad level study after understanding the basics and appreciating the jargon. Annie Duke provides insightful ways to better your game and realize the holes in your preconceived play strategies. After reading this book, you'll be much more adept to recognize poor play at the table and feel confident why someone is completely clueless in their understanding of poker when they open their mouth at the table.

I have read over 60 poker books and I can honestly say that this book is now my favorite strategy book for low stakes NLHE cash games. But this book will not be helpful to beginners. I recommend all of The Harrington books for beginner and intermediate levels and Ed Miller's books especially 'The Course'. I now play predominantly low and sometimes middle stakes cash games about 20 hours per week and in addition read poker books to improve my game. Annie Duke is a great teacher. This book together with her short book 'the Middle Zone' and Ed Miller's 'the Course' are the most important books I've read which have impacted on my winning results. I can't wait for Annie Duke's next books. Thank you Annie!!!

She talks like someone with experience. Example: 78s middle position. She gets real. What good is it, if you raise and miss where are you? If you limp and hit the 8, but there is an over card, where are you? The book is filled with in depth analysis.

Highly recommend. But only if your tired of making stupid decisions and following the herd. Enjoy it, use the principles to watch others making stupid decisions. A game of sorts where you watch the principles not being used and you name them.

The only good use for this book is as liner to a bird cage.All the chapters so called topics are lost in the authors desire to run with his political narrative (and I agree with him on all of that.....politically).Anyone looking for a good introduction to critical thinking would be far better off purchasing “Critical Thinking: A Very Short Inteoduction”. By far a better resource for this topic.

Excellent and thorough book, well researched and well written. Shame the index isn't better and you have to do a bit of searching for places and people.

Very in depth biography of his life and work but I was hoping for more high quality reproductions and a collective of his work. aka I would say this book is 70-80% text compared to the images of his work.

I have seen Clarke's stained glass windows in Honan Chapel in Cork and wanted to know more about the artist. This book is very cry good. His art is stupendous.

Good exposition; with lots of info.

Great book for anyone who is interested in Harry Clarke. The book is rich with details and images throughout his career, you will find many drawings you wont find online.
