Steps to success is a comprehensive guide to the mechanics of squash. I really enjoyed the detailed drill diagrams and frame by frame pictures of the shots. The chapter on movement is especially helpful since it shows the difference between the traditional and more modern dynamic movement. One mistake I have is I don't bend enough into my shots. So the pictures helped emphasize that point. There are good drills for both solo practice as well as partner practice. Whenever I go on court I typically just do straight drives to myself. But the book has opened up quite a lot other drills I should be doing that are more challenging and interesting.Overall the book is not something you can finish in a couple of weeks. You have to work on each specific shot for some time before moving on to other shots. There is a score sheet for each drill that tells you when you're ready to move onto the next step. If you are serious about improving your game from a grounds up approach, this is definitely the book for you.

GREAT book to read if you like to play squash! One of my favorite Squash books! Very detailed and teach the game well!

The Drills listed are quite good. I wish there was a way to remember them while you are on the court. It feels a bit goofy to carry the book to a game!I think a DVD accompanying the book would be really nice. Most of the exercises / techniques are in-motion & seeing them on a video would be perfect.Otherwise, good coverage from basics to advanced training & tactics.A minor thing to note was that most of the illustrations use left-handed players to show the techniques. Can be a minor annoyance as I had to adjust my perspective to a right-handed player.

- eminent content- I trained accordingly and I have gained certain improvements in techniques and court movements.- easy to re-read

The book is well done but there are chapters in the kindle version that are completely messed up. The chapter on disguise and deception is practically unreadable due to words jumbled out of order. Is it possible to get a cleaned up version that is readable all the way through?

Gift for husband. He is reading it now. I think he finds it interesting

Good book for new players and above. Would recommend for someone still learning game like me. Most drill require partners to practice. Not to many folks like to practice...only play.

This is just an amazing book. In today's world of you tube videos for everything, I never thought a book could be this helpful and so precise in teaching a sport.

Review

From Graeme Simsion's foreword: While such fundamental issues remain unrecognized and unanswered, Data and Reality, with its lucid and compelling elucidation of the questions, needs to remain in print. I read the book as a database administrator in 1980, as a researcher in 2002, and just recently as the manuscript for the present edition. On each occasion I found something more, and on each occasion I considered it the most important book I had read on data modeling. It has been on my recommended reading list forever. The first chapter in particular should be mandatory reading for anyone involved in data modeling. In publishing this new edition, Steve Hoberman has not only ensured that one of the key books in the data modeling canon remains in print, but has added his own comments and up-to-date examples, which are likely to be helpful to those who have come to data modeling more recently. Don't do any more data modeling work until you've read it.

About the Author

William Kent (1936-2005) was a renowned researcher in the field of data modeling. Author of Data and Reality, he wrote scores of papers and spoke at conferences worldwide, posing questions about database design and the management of information that remain unanswered today. Though he earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and a master's in mathematics, he had no formal training in computer science. Kent worked at IBM and later at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, where he helped develop prototype database systems. He also served on or chaired several international standards committees. Kent lived in New York City and later Menlo Park, Calif., before retiring to Moab, Utah, to pursue his passions of outdoor photography and protecting the environment.

I did my PhD in database in the early 80s. This book by W. Kent was around already and I heard about it but did not have a copy of it. Had I read the book, my research work would have been 10 times better. This current printing is the reprint of the original one. The author mentioned in the preface that he was asked to update the book but he didn't because he thought it was still up to date (and I absolutely agree). If you are in data modeling and database area, believe me, this is a must read. It is about the philosophy of data modeling and how data and reality are related. In my opinion, its content cannot be obsolete. It is technology independent. The concept of naming and identification alone is priceless for data modelers. I can't believe I have been working in the database area for more than 30 years without it.

This is an excellent introduction to the ambiguities that make designing a database difficult and some of the more philosophical aspects of designing databases. A lot of the historical detail is interesting for modern practitioners. I would strongly recommend trying to obtain an edition of this book other than the "third edition" which has been significantly modified by Steve Hoberman. I am in complete agreement with this review (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/customer-reviews/RZUKQF8JV7DM3/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=1935504215). I would recommend attempting to get hold of an older edition, like this one, while emailing Penguin asking them for a new edition of the original book.

This book does bring a sense of "reality" to data and data modeling. The author provides a fresh perspective on data and data modeling without being dogmatic about which way is the best way to represent data. He exposes some of the subtle but critical factors which everyone working with data needs. His exposure and description of relationships and how to address them was enlightening.

Really interesting conceptual look at data modeling and defining entities

Some very important considerations for data modeling. Clearly explained with lots of good examples. William Kent does an excellent job of delving into the philosophy but always pointing back to the need to keep things practical for your use case. This will change the way you think about data and how it is represented.

Very helpful in understanding issues related to representing reality in machine-readable form.

I found this book following a reference from a Martin Fowler book. It's been a while since I read it, very interesting discourse on modelling data.

A study group book. Good discussion but everyone pretty much agreed it was too vague and out of date.

The thought of tackling Belgium without Rick Steves was daunting when we booked our flights earlier this year. Thankfully, this 1st Edition was released and available on Amazon! With overnight shipping, it arrived just 12 hours prior to boarding our flight on April 2.Rick's recommendations have accompanied me through 12 countries (and many major cities) since I started vacationing in Europe on and off since 2005. These books have NEVER ....repeat NEVER....steered me wrong. My journeys were planned using the always-reliable guidance; my travels were enhanced by information that helped me be a bolder adventurer; and my experiences were richer for the treasures revealed by entering "Through the Back Door".And, with this guide, he's done it again!

In the opinion of this frequent traveler, Rick Steves's guides are the ONLY ones you need if you're going anywhere in Europe! In the past, I've bought two or three guidebooks for the same country before I felt like I had all of the information I needed. Once I found the Rick Steves books, I have never bought another vesion of any travel guide again. The Rick Steves guides are so thorough, that the only way you could get better, more complete guidance would be to have Rick or one of his tour guides along with you. Each guide takes you through the country city by city, including what to do before you leave home, what to pack, where to stay, where to eat, and what to see. He'll tell you what sights will need advance booking or reservations. There are walking guides for cities, as well as detailed walking tours for museums, churches, and other major sights. For the history lovers, there are beautifully written sections to educate you about what you're seeing, which makes your experience measurably more meaningful. The information is so detailed that Rick tells you things like, "When exiting the front of the train station, turn to your left and walk 20 yards to the bus stop. Take bus #11 to go directly to the castle." It doesn't get any easier to plan your sightseeing than that! And of course, there are simplified city maps to help you navigate once you get there, usually marked with his suggested walking tour route.Other helpful sections include tips about money, shopping, climate, and transportation. But one of my favorite parts of Rick's books is that he tells you how to really see a place by becoming what he calls a "temporary local." In other words, don't miss the real heart of the country by seeing only the well known tourist hot spots. He tells you how the locals live and how you can have that experience, too. Finally, each book includes a list of survival phrases and words to help you communicate while you're there. As Rick says, and I can confirm, the locals will very much appreciate your attempt to use their language instead of just assuming that they speak English. Don't worry about your pronunciation - just try it!There is so much valuable information in the Rick Steves guides that I'm sure I'm leaving something out. In my opinion, they have no equal!

I used the sections on Bruges intensively, and also used the sessions on Ghent and Brussels. They were helpful, though I was sad about the omission of the "Jerusalem" church and home from the list of sites, as I would have made it my business to get there if I had known about it.Two things bothered me using the guide on the Kindle:One was the extensive section about the Museum of Torture right in the middle of the Bruges guide. I had to keep flipping through to get to the parts I needed, and I had to see this long part about torture, with some kind of picture, many times. I did not enjoy seeing it even once. I don't think these museums should be encouraged, but at any rate, why does it need so much space in the guidebook?Second thing was that on the Kindle the city maps, because they are intended to be on facing pages, are just half maps, and really not useful at all unless you are trying to navigate between two places which are due north or due south of each other.

Used Rick Steve’s book while in Belgium. I god sent. The info provide was worth its weight in gold, especially train info. We made the mistake of doing our bookings in Amsterdam. If you want to ride the Thaley make your reservations at least two weeks in adavanced, even that might not be enough. We wanted a early Thaley to Schiphol, but found out it was sold out. We took the regular train. Due to mechanical problems we had to change trains twice. Consequently we got to the air port 90 min b 4 boarding. Wanted to be at Schlphol earlier to do some duty free shopping. Order the book early, read it and plan plan plan!!!

Thick book that does a great job covering your quick need to knows in Belgium. Loved that it went over many cities and their details. Helped me yok look more into what we had time for and could do. Remember to not only use his restaurant and bar guides. Some have become touristy and there are better places around!

Fabulous as always! Thank you Rick!! Used for 3 weeks this summer. As a medically fragile traveler, this helped us decide what to do, what to spend my energy on. While not written for that purpose, it helped tremendously. Followed suggestion of ripping out just the pages for countries we were visiting. Hard for this book lover to do, but helped keep things light.

Typical Rick Steves quality guide book. We have been purchasing his European books since 1999 and they are helpful and the print size and color is easily readable. We don't pay much attention to his lodging and restaurant recommendations anymore but his descriptions of sites to see, choices of places to visit on a schedule and other basic information are very good. When we plan a trip to Europe our first purchase is his book but we always do so with other books and especially internet research.

Rick Steves is the best travel book out there. It is not even embarrassing carrying this around because you get to meet other Rick fans. My daughter and I just returned from the Netherlands and Belgium and these were constantly with us. We especially like Rick's philosophy about traveling--it's not about shopping, but about gaining experiences. His suggestions on where to eat were especially helpful. And the walking tours in each city were terrific.

What an interesting, but depressing book. It accentuates how little human beings have evolved to this day. If not for the exception of a few good people, those less fortunate would be left to die. I’m not a big history buff, but this book took me to the panhandle. I suffered along with the people presented in this tale and journeyed with them to what they thought would be salvation. I suffered their angst when they realized life was no better here for them and rejoiced when the superintendent took an interest in one group of migrants and helped them learn to better themselves and life around them. An amazing gentleman and amazing, hard-working, earnest migrants. Their unfailing determination in the face of poverty, illness, and bigotry is a lesson to us all to this day. Tons of photographs bring the story to life and help break up big chunks of text. Older children will find this book fascinating!

Overwhelming! So many things about this book stirred deep emotion in me. This story related to the people who left the Dust Bowl in search of a better life during the Depression and traveled Route 66 to Southern California. The deprivations and discrimination they suffered touched me deeply. I was shocked to read of the hard-heartedness of many Californians; I didn't want to believe it.One of the wonderful things about this book is the story of one man who made up his mind to make a difference for the "Okies." Using the attitudes of the majority he found a way to acceptance and inclusion for those who had been rejected and shunned. My parents were young adults during the "dirty thirties" and lived in the Dust Bowl. Since their destination was not California, but Oregon, this is a part of the story I had never heard. Thank you Jerry Stanley for telling this amazing story and including so many revealing pictures.Marjorie Eldred, Author of Seizing the Treasure: 101 Nuggets to Warm Your Heart, Journey From Addiction to Freedom, and Blooms, Blunders and Blessings. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Books+by+Marjorie++Eldred&rh=n%3A283155%2Ck%3ABooks+by+Marjorie++Eldred

The writing in this book is excellent, flowing evenly from page to page. Many of the photographs within are pure art, having been taken by Russell Lee, Dorothea Lange, and others. These two people are the Pieter Bruegel and Thomas Hart Benton (depicting plain, everyday folk) of American photography. This book relates a small chunk of American history, to be sure, but more than that, it relates universal themes of the human condition. Overall, the book relates the brutal conditions of the dust bowl, the migration over the mountains and desert, taunting and prejudice from settled Californians, and eventual attainment of excellence, as revealed by the construction and maintenance of the Weedpatch School, which eventually became a model school in the community. My 5 1/2 year old enjoyed reading every page, and found particular mirth in the unusual daily chore that the dust bowl children did with their cows. The description of this unusual chore is worth the price of the book. What was this daily chore? One way to find out is to borrow or purchase this book.

Much has been said about this book. All I can say is, "wow" what a book. I shed bittersweet tears as I read this wonderful book. Although I never lived in Weedpatch, I was born in 1935 to migrant Arkies. We lived in the Linnell Camp near Visalia. This story is my life. Oh how I could relate. This book was like a motion picture, that I was in, and I traveled right down the road with it. I don't know if a person could relate if they haven't lived this life, but, I know that this book is so well written and illustrated that surely a person with a heart and caring spirit should be able to follow this book even if they could never imagine the deep down hardships, how the kids and families stuck together, bonded and had a good time. A lot of us could add our names to the long list of Weedpatch kids that became a success; it only takes hope, dreams, a longing for a better tomorrow, and a can do spirit. It is always an added benefit to have a man like Mr. Hart to believe in you. I loved this man and only wish he were still alive so that I could thank him for caring and acting on those cares.

For those of us interested in the Dust Bowl's history and legacy, this book details and examines the children of this well-known migration from the Plains to the West in search of food, work, and shelter.Ironically, if you watched the Grapes of Wrath where you would see for yourself how they portrayed the children in the camps as forgotten, ignored, discrminated against for being Okies. They were all called that while their parents searched for jobs in the daytime. The Weedpatch Camp in Bakersfield, California is an example of how a government run camp was different where it allowed all the migrants to live more like human beings. The book builds up to the school where it was in existence for five years. It was so impressive to the community that non-residents wanted their children to attend too. This book is a great read for children and adults about the Dust Bowl, the migration, and California living in the 1930s. You would be very impressed to get it.

To a Mountain in Tibet, by Colin Thubron

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. œThe mountain path is the road of the dead, writes Thubron (Shadow of the Silk Road) in this engrossing and affecting travel memoir that transcends the mere physical journey. In the wake of his mother™s death, Thubron sets off to Mount Kailas in Tibet, a peak sacred to one-fifth of the world™s population and the source of four of India™s great rivers. Kailas has never been climbed: the slopes are important to Tibetan Buddhists who say the mountain™s guardian is Demchog (a tantric variant of Shiva). Along with two guides, Thubron embarks on a pilgrimage that begins in Nepal and crosses into Tibet, recounting not only his arduous journey but also the political and cultural history of Tibet and the West™s continued fascination with its mysticism. Along the way, he observes pilgrims of various religions converging on Kailas and the myriad monasteries, most of which were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and rebuilt decades later. It is the poignant evocations of his mother and sister (who died at 21), interwoven with his profound respect for the Tibetan culture and landscape that make Thubron™s memoir an utterly moving read. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Kailas is a sacred, snow-capped mountain of the Himalayas in a remote area of western Tibet. There have been no recorded attempts to climb it, in deference to Buddhist, Hindu, Bn, and Jainist beliefs. Award-winning British travel writer and novelist Thubron (Shadow of the Silk Road, 2007) traveled along the Karnali River (a tributary of the Ganges) by foot with only a guide, a cook, and a horse man on a long and often treacherous trek to visit this mystical peak, considered holy by one-fifth of humankind. The journey is the reward, for both writer and reader, in this rich, beautiful account of the landscape, people, culture, and politics of Tibet. Much more than a travel guide or history lesson, this engrossing and gorgeously written book is also a stirring memoir tinged with the authors own grief, reflecting on the joys and losses hes experienced. Thubron is the steward of his fathers legacy and keeper of his mothers memories, sharing familial recollections on a pilgrimage toward one of natures precious jewels, and his own parentless future. --Chris Keech

This is the fourth book of Colin Thubron's I've read and while they're all fascinatingly interesting and wonderfully crafted, this is probably my favorite because of how personal it feels. He retains from his earlier work the vivid pictures he paints for us of what he sees and encounters, adding to it in this case a fascinating exploration of the lore and beliefs surrounding the mountains and lakes he passes. Additionally, it's clear this trip has the added dimension of a personal pilgrimage as the author peels back a bit of the curtain to show glimpses of his family's past as he reflects on the passing of his last immediate family member. The reflections are wonderfully interwoven with both his physical journey and the legends of the territory through which he treks.

A long tedious description in my opinion that becomes redundant. I had hoped for more history which was touched upon but glossed over to use infinite detail for every step taken. Oh well.

What makes good travel writing enjoyable is being able to see, and to some degree, comprehend a completely foreign culture through the eyes of someone who creates a connection between you, the reader, and that culture. If this was an impetus for Thubron's latest book, he succeeded handsomely. Thubron gives the reader the intellectual/factual background to help interpret the different characters he meets and the various ruins or functioning monasteries he visits. His descriptions of the mountains, streams, and wildlife can be stunning. His focus on the underlying mythologies or religions only add to the reader's ultimate understanding and pleasure in this visit to a most other-worldly place in the Himalayas. And, Thubron's personal reasons for undertaking the journey only make the book more human.A serious, substantive, and beautiful work.

Colin's narrative of this journey took me along as if on a river—starting in an eddy, advancing into slow moving water, then into a steady stream of formed rapids. Poetic. Halting. Another impressive work by a great writer/explorer.

Well written and quietly thoughtful book.

This book provides a wonderful view of a journey to Kailas. The history and legends surrounding this holy place are intertwined with the details of present-day pilgrims and the author paints a rich picture of the details of his journey. What seems to be missing is what drew me to the book in the first place. It was purportedly a very personal pilgrimage made by the author as a means of dealing with the passing of his mother (and thus, his family). I felt that the personal connection/motivation was mostly lacking and I was left with a great description of a trip and a history of the region, but very little insight into what the trip meant to the author.

Having visited Tibet a number of times and written about it for magazines, the description and detail in this beautifully written book brings the experience of being there flooding back. For those who have never been, or who may never go, the outstanding descriptions paint a picture that is the next best thing to being there.

Colin Thubron does it again! This is one of the best ever travel writers in the english language. Makes reading about places that you will probably never see very interesting. Reading Mr. Thubron whets my appetite for travel to out of the way places.

Review

“Edward Castronova has again charted new waters to the virtual worlds emerging as the next frontier. He has proven himself as the oracle of the virtual world revolution.” ―Christian Renaud, Networked Virtual Environments, Cisco“A book full of insights about our online present and a hopeful look at the future where politics and economics will be increasingly governed by the rules of video games.” ―John Beck, President of The AttentionCompany and co-author of The Kids are Alright“As virtual worlds rise in popularity, they are bound to have effects on the way we live our real world lives. Dr. Castronova has put together a persuasive case that the real world may begin to model its institutions on games simply because the general populace finds them more fun. It's an eye-opening tour through how virtual worlds are run, and why practical, enjoyable governance is very different from the systems employed today.” ―Raph Koster, virtual world designer

The central theme of Exodus is the concept of "attention migration". That is: that more and more people choose to immerse themselves in synthetic worlds (Castronova's word instead of "virtual worlds") - MMOGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Games), like Second Life and World of Warcraft. Today they have at least 16 million registered users, and the number is increasing quickly. Also, some of these synthetic worlds function like alternate societies with their own norms of conduct, citizenships, economies, codes and policies and so on. In a information society where attention is central, the increasing attention spent on synthetic worlds will (according to Castronova) create a "atmospeheric event"...Castronova writes well and he discusses this social phenomenon and it's probable future impact in an interesting way. Though at times I think the discussion becomes a little repetitive, and I can't totally agree that "real" societies will have to become more "fun" and gamelike to compete with the synthetic counterparts. But it is a fascinating thought.

For any who wish to understand the virtual world, this is a major insight. From a gamer perspective, despite the first hand experience, this book highlighted many details that I had not realized. The digital world/internet has its own culture, whether or not the participant actively realizes this. From this book, I also decided to purchase Castronova's other book: Synthetic Worlds: The Business and Culture of Online Games. It was then did I realize part of what is in this book is the same as its predecessor. Overall, very insightful.

THIS BOOK, EXODUS TO THE VIRTUAL WORLD, IS A GREAT INTRODUCTION TO THOSE WHO WISH TO STUDY THE ASPECTS OF LIFE IN THE VIRTUAL, OR, SYTHETIC WORLD. THE FASCINATION THAT PEOPLE HAVE WITH GETTING AWAY FROM REALITY BECAUSE IT IS BORING AND NO LONGER "FUN" IS A RATHER DANGEROUS ROAD TO TAKE. MOST WORKING ADULTS HAVE JUST ENOUGH TIME TO JUGGLE WORK, FAMILY LIFE, AND THE MANY CHORES COMMON TO MOST FAMILIES. IMMERSING YOURSELF FOR 10 OR 20 HOURS A WEEK IN THE SYNTHETIC WORLD BECAUSE IT IS "FUN" AND LETTING GO OF REAL LIFE AND ONE'S RESPONSIBILITIES IS A LIDICROUS ACT OF SELF-CENTERED SELFISHNESS. IN MY OPINION IT IS AN IRRESPONSIBLE COP-OUT. THE AUTHOR PAYS ALMOST NO ATTENTION TO THE NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF LIFE IN THE SYNTHETIC WORLD, BUT, I SUPPOSE THAT WAS NOT HIS INTENT IN WRITING THE BOOK. I WOULD CERTAINLY NOT ALLOW MY CHILDREN TO TAKE THIS DANGEROUS ROAD. ALSO, MAKING MONEY IN THE SYNTHETIC WORLD IS LAUGHABLE: WHY WOULD ANYONE PAY $2000 FOR SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T EXIST IN REAL LIFE? WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE BLIND TO THIS CORRUPT IDEA? INDEED,I WAS BORN IN A DIFFERENT WORLD.

This is a thought provoking book with an excellent tour of what goes on in the game design world. But let your own thoughts occur without being led by those of the author. In that way the read will be productive. The title is an accurate prediction but not a good indication of the content. I think increasing numbers will get involved in virtual reality for the fun and psychological rewards it brings, but they will do it for escape to a kind of pure and controlled environment, something the physical world can never be.Having been a character in World of Warcraft, a game I played with dedication for 9 months, I opened this book with anticipation. But the central premise that the fun to be had in the virtual world will bring demands for the real world to be more fun is more than a bit wacky. I get the impression that the author wanted to make some kind of broad statement in defense of virtual reality and settled on the transfer of fun.The real world is full of entertainment and fun already. Neil Postman wrote a book called Amusing Ourselves to Death that questioned it. That was a far better thought out book than this one.Castronova wants us to believe that the politics that work to make an online game can be transferred to real life but there are differences that make this all but impossible. For one thing, the risks in real life are real. You don't get to die and come back to life, you don't get an infinite number of tries to achieve a goal. The real environment is not magically regenerative so that once you have taken something another copy appears to be taken by others. There is no infinite supply of anything here on Terra Firma.Throughout the book, I kept wondering if he had read Brave New World, a dire warning of a world where pleasure for the masses has been achieved while the whole thing is watched over and directed by hidden managers. Castronova implies that it would be a good thing for virtual world game designers to step into positions of authority. Aldous Huxley is turning in his grave. The book increases in silliness, reaching a peak in the fantasy in the epilogue of a Senator logging in to World of Warcraft. But Castronova's effort is not a waste of time. Read it for enlightenment about how and why game worlds work as they do...and they do work very well.
