The first half of the book had me reeling with dismay and much concern for the U.S. and other parts of the world. It is a thoroughly researched book. The second half of the book gave me hope and appreciation for the people who participate in pushing back hard on elements of fascism. The book is current and includes Charlottesville, VA as an example. I saw the pushback in real-time when Unite the Right failed to unite anyone in its much-publicized Unite the Right rally. Only 20+ cowards showed up, but thousands of counter-protesters were at the ready. This book explains the methods various anti-fascist groups use. Some methods are confrontation, but not all. This book also helped de-mystify "Antifa." Well worth reading -- it's easy and well-organized.
An important read for our times.
I've been reading around on the subject of contemporary white supremacist and ethnic nationalist groups, right wing populism, and fascism of and on for twenty years. I think this is one of the cleanest, clearest explanation of how fascists recruits, what they believe, and how to keep them at bay. There's enough historical framing here to justify Burley's concise definition of fascism is a movement that hopes to make implicit hierarchies explicit. Burley explains how these movements have survived, grown, and been back, how they recruit. Without Burley's guide through the Alt-Right and other strands of even more dangerous tendencies, we can see that fighting fascism today must go beyond Trotsky's famous united front and embrace a diversity of tactics.
Due to hearing the term fascism coming up in the news so often the past year I've read several books on the topic to deepen my understanding. None that I have read have done a better job of defining fascism and how it has evolved in the 21st century than Burley's latest work. There probably isn't a better resource for demystifying the "alt-right", due primarily to the fact that Shane was researching the associated groups long before they became a household name. This is also one of the best resources I've come across for understanding the broad spectrum of activist groups dedicated to opposing the rising tide of fascism.
The book outlines the entire ideological and American history of fascism, sets it in Trump's America, and gives a detailed look at how movements challenge it. The best book of its type I have ever read, I cannot recommend it more highly.
A timely and important book. Burley's work is well researched, informative, and incredibly useful.
I’ve just watched an hour-long interview with Burley from which I had two main takeaways:1. Everyone who isn’t a leftist is a fascist;2. The only way to suppress fascism is censorship.Burley doesn’t believe in unrestricted free speech. He thinks that certain truths are so obvious that no dissent or debate is justified. To Burley, there’s no difference between National Review and Der Sturmer. He believes that Antifa is a positive force, and it’s composed of people “willing to take the next step.â€He comes across as a very intelligent and glib individual, which leads me to believe that he’s well aware of the real history of fascism, which is that it has its roots in the early 20th Century struggles between the red shirts- the internationalist Socialists- and the black shirts, the nationalist socialists. The red shirts were the communists, the black shirts included those who became the fascists. Mussolini devised Fascism as a movement that had the populist appeal of socialism, but rejected Soviet-style internationalist government. Hitler used this as the basis of his National Socialism, and as Robert Conquest sagely observed long ago, when it came down to actual practice there wasn’t a whit of difference between the two.
