This is the story of a middle school in El Paso, Texas that had a devoted art teacher who wanted to build a national chess championship. Saul Ramirez develops his rule for chess play which he applies to rules for life. I could see this becoming a film like "The Queen of Katwe."
This book has the power to change lives, especially those of marginalized children. When the vision of a great coach is merged with the desire of young people to chart their own course in the world, great things happen. I've met these champions and their coach. Their story, while compelling and fun to read, is merely the beginning. They have nothing but great things awaiting them in the years ahead.
What an amazing book! I loved reading about how these students and their teachers persevered! Not only a great book about chess but how the rules can be applied to real life.
Sadly this story is a complete lie. Mr. Ramirez forced his children to cheat and lose games on purpose lower their ratings before the national tournament. He has been found guilty by the US Chess Federation, and they recommend that he receive a lifetime ban. Thirteen Members and Former Members of the Henderson Middle School Chess Team were also charged and found guilty of cheating.
I can’t wait to share this story with my students! I work with underprivileged students at a school in Albuquerque. I tell my students on daily basis that I believe in them! They will do great things.
What a wonderful book! It was very motivating and a reminder why educators chose their profession; to make a difference in the lives of students! !
The US Chess Federation's ethics committee unanimously found Ramirez guilty of telling his students to lose games on purpose so they could compete in a weaker rating bracket. The committee voted to ban him for life from US Chess. So the book should be classified as mostly fiction.From the Chess.com article on the scandal:"the US Chess Federation's ethics committee found that more than two dozen games were lost on purpose to lower players' ratings.The nine-page decision from February 22 is a result of nearly a year of evidence gathering. It concluded that coach Saul Ramirez of the Henderson Middle School chess team in El Paso, Texas deliberately instructed multiple players in several events to lose games intentionally. The effect of the losses was that these players dropped below a ratings limit, which allowed them to play in "under" sections at the 2018 National K-9 Championship, where Henderson would go on to win first place as a team in two under sections."
