Great pictures! Short amount of reading on each page, but you can use the pictures to talk about what is happening. Grandkids first reaction to the cover didn't grab them (not Disney characters or superheros) but liked it once we opened it and read it. In my opinion, best for kids 3-6.
I purchased a "used copy" it came in perfect, new condition.... and signed!!! We love this realistic book about ice fishing with grandpa. Great to teach counting.

The book is beautifully illustrated and both my four year old and seven year old granddaughters like the story. The seven year old reads it to the four year old - over and over.

This book will be an excellent way to share the experience with your child. If you do go ice fishing with your child, what a great way to compare how you ice fish to how they ice fish in the book. The illustrations are appropriately plaid! The rhythm of the words and the length of the text are perfect for a cozy afternoon read. You will see the cold, but feel the coziness of the ice fishing shack and the relationship between the grandfather and child.
The minute I saw the cover of this book I was hooked. Evocative of any Minnesota lake in winter, who can resist those cosy ice houses and the plaid fish swimming serenely below the ice? The rest of the book does not disappoint. Spare, lyrical words describe the close relationship of a boy and his grandfather in their quest to catch a fish on a frozen lake. And as a bonus, small children will love the opportunity to count along with the text. In the end, what's most important to the fishing duo is the friendship, not the fish. Two thumbs up to the author and illustrators for this lovely book.
If you think ice fishing is only about shivering while waiting for a bite on the end of a hook, you are certainly mistaken. Larson's engaging writing shows you the magic that happens when two people hope together. The brilliant illustrations by Johnson and Fancher are as enchanting as the shimmering Northern Lights in a night sky. (And who can resist plaid fish? Who would want to?)
