A friend recently joked that I'm obsessed with death. He said, "You're like a Goth in bright colors." To me, my fascination with the afterlife is directly related to everything that really matters while I'm actually here in 'skin school'. Ever since reading, Moody and Perry's "Life After Life" in the early 80s, few things have interested me as much as the myriad experiences folks have as they step through that last (?) door.Although I call it a "near near death experience", I had enough of one (the tunnel sensation and loving telepathic encounter with my deceased great-grandfather) at 19 - dying of undiagnosed peritonitis for two days in ICU - to be certain that we see our beloved again. Since then, I've probably read at least a thousand other accounts of what happens when we get thisclose and come back...Qualifications aside, I purchased "Glimpses of Eternity" a few days ago, read it twice and haven't wanted it to end. Despite my so-called awareness of 'all things near death', apparently I'd missed the shared death phenomenon completely. "Glimpses" is both scholarly and anecdotal, comparing NDEs and SDEs emphasizing the obvious difference: the "shared" business. Since skeptics often claim that NDEs result from a 'brain glitch' that occurs in mammals at death, activation of the temporal lobe, etc, they'd be hard-pressed to explain how these things happen to healthy others simultaneously. There are even cases where someone many miles away from the dying person - and a stranger at that - sees "heavenly" lights, hears "music of the spheres", etc. (Quotations are my own) People even report experiencing the dying person's life review.Few things are more obnoxious than certainty about something that's unprovable, so I'll just say that the elegance of "Glimpses of Eternity" is obvious from the start: Moody has been exploring how we die for a half century and heard every argument there is against any spiritual aspect of it and he isn't the least bit pedantic. In the end, SDEs may present the most compelling evidence of all that when we die, that's when the good stuff begins. This book is comforting to those of us with hunches that there's much more after this. And it's also just plain exciting in that such seemingly supernatural events occur between humans at the point of one of their deaths. It will be disappointing if this doesn't cause at least a few die-hard materialists to reconsider...just this once.Brett Butler

Now in his book Glimpses of Eternity it just validates it even more so. Exciting that the shared death experience happens so often and gives one comfort in knowing our loved ones live on. In this book Dr. Moody gives the first hand accounts [like in his other books] of those who've shared death experiences with loved ones, friends or patients. If you've lost someone you dearly love or are about to or if you, yourself my be passing on soon I highly recommend this book. It will give you comfort and the knowledge to help you cope with the eventual prospect of death.
I've read countless books on spiritual and metaphysical topics, many about the near death experience. But this is the first time in all of my research that I had ever even heard of the Shared Death Experience. These are profound and powerful stories, and it was incredibly eye-opening to learn that so many doctors and healthcare professionals have these otherworldly experiences so frequently. Beautifully and clearly written with a scientific framework by the renowned researcher and psychologist Dr. Raymond Moody. Thank you, Dr. Moody, for bringing these important topics to light!
Raymond Moody's "Life After Life" changed my life in a very positive way years ago, convincing me, after years of unbelief, of the reality of God, Jesus, and life after life. Now his "Glimpses of Eternity" has added another dimension for me to ponder. I already have four friends who have had shared-death experiences similar to some he describles, so the leap isn't as great, but still I'm challenged by some of the implications that Dr. Moody draws. I suggest that you may want to read it for yourselves and make your own conclusions.
