The Collected Letters of Alan Watts, by Alan Watts

Review

“Altogether revelatory.” — Maria Popova, Brain Pickings“The writings of Alan Watts, a prominent 20th-century Western interpreter of East Asian religion and philosophy, receive a formidable bolstering in this revealing collection of unpublished letters compiled by two of his daughters. . . . The first half of the collection is particularly illuminating: the letters reveal a sharp, delighted mind, conversing with others in near-paroxysm to synthesize Buddhist insight with Christian metaphysics and “God-as-Person” theology (his early emphasis on mystical experience as a dramatic action hints toward his later intellectual development as a popular guru of 70s counterculture). Commentary by his daughters gives context to some crucial details that are otherwise elided by Watts himself, such as the deterioration of a few of his marriages and his relationships with literary figures such as Aldous Huxley, Carl Jung, and Sokei-an Sasaki. This collection is a gold mine of insights, offering glimpses into a brilliant mind for newcomers and the acquainted alike.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Perhaps the most complete and accurate profile of the man and his work. . . . Watts’s daughters . . . add indispensable context and insights into Watts’s personal and family life. . . . The Collected Letters adds a new portal to the identity of the man most responsible for introducing Zen Buddhism and the many strands of Eastern philosophy to the masses in the West.” — Foreword (starred review) “Alan Watts’s influence in the USA, which began to really flourish in the mid-1950s, was remarkable. Alan was so clear and such a good writer, and so well grounded in the teachings and worldview he extolled, that he was taken by some as ‘easy’ and glib. Without artifice, a truly human life and heart, he was both deep and accessible, and made no effort to impress. Consequently, he was impressive, and he lived his life fully and to the end. . . . I knew Alan over twenty-five years, and he was always a grand and instructive friend to me. Yet it took some years after his death before I could see and appreciate the whole. This collection of letters will entrance and challenge you, and be with you for decades.” — Gary Snyder, Pulitzer Prize–winning poet “This collection of letters reveals more about Alan Watts than we’d known before, his faults as well as his many virtues, his weaknesses as well as his strengths, and turns of his wisdom not to be found in his books. He called himself a philosophical entertainer, but he was much more than that. You can learn a lot about Chinese and Japanese aesthetics from him, about secrets of language, about the satoris of everyday life. What a life he lived! Yeats said of Oscar Wilde that he left half of what he had to say in conversation instead of his written works. I can testify that Alan, too, left much of his genius unwritten. If Wilde was the greatest conversationalist of his day, Alan arguably was the greatest of his. Fortunately, though, he has left us his recordings and these letters.” — Michael Murphy, cofounder of Esalen Institute “Alan Watts once told me, ‘In fifty years, nobody will remember me.’ To the contrary, his books, essays, and recorded lectures have gained in stature in recent decades, and the claim that he simply popularized Eastern wisdom has been eclipsed by a recognition of his scholarly insights. I never knew Alan to utter a boring sentence or write a dull word. This collection of his letters bears testimony to my impressions. His keen observations, his witty rejoinders, and his depth of knowledge are reflected in this incredible collection. Brava to his daughters for their diligence, and bravo to their father for taking the time to write his circle of friends and acquaintances!” — Stanley Krippner, Phd, coauthor of Personal Mythology “Alan Watts has touched so many lives, then and now and forever into the future. The Chinese name I have chosen for him is ‘Ai-Lan,’ with two symbols — 愛蘭 — depicting ‘the love of orchid ’: the man who loves the beauty and the quality of being a highly cultivated human being. These letters offer us further insights into the Man with Many Qualities we can admire and emulate. I am forever grateful to him as my mentor, colleague, and friend.” — Chungliang Al Huang, founder and president of the Living Tao Foundation and director of the International Lan Ting Institute

This book is everything I hoped it would be. My husband and I are huge Alan Watts fans. We are so grateful to his daughters for putting these letters together!

I am a big Alan Watts fan, he’s my favorite old dead zen hippy! I don’t know what I expected from this book, given it’s a series of letters he wrote to his parents, compiled by his family, starting when he was a young man. It is interesting to read how he describes cutting his “spiritual teeth” with his various teachers. His descriptions of life in NY with his wife and child in the 1930’s is also interesting. My grandmother and her sister attended Juliard in the late 1920’s, were there for the crash on 1929, and it let me imagine what their lives were like during that time. As an adult, I asked them what it was like to be in NYC during the crash and they said they didn’t know, as in it didn’t affect them so much, because they “didn’t take a paper.” Ah the innocent obvious! I get that same feel from the author as he’s describing his experiences and trying to stay positive with his parents during WWII. Having listened to several of his recordings, I love how he teaches and his writing style as well. I haven’t quite finished the book yet and I’m hoping that it becomes more infused with his teachings.

This is a must have for a Watts fan. Two of his daughters have done a fine job putting this together. It's a bit of his life that we get a front row seat for. Having read his many books, listened to his audio archives both from cd collections and from YouTube I find it hard to read w/o hearing his voice, and his laugh. It's a cross section of his entire life through his surviving letters.

Alan's daughters did us ALL a great service by sharing these letters.

Awesome. A must read for new and old Watts fans. A great glimpse into the man behind the fan fare.

Alan Watts was one of the greatest men to have ever lived

For the most part I grew up in the 60's in the San Francisco Bay Area. I remember hearing about him from a fellow high school student at Mt. Diablo High School in Concord. I listened to him a few times on the radio as well. But I really didn't get him, let alone It. The summer before my Junior year at Diablo my dad bought a farm in Missouri and off I went. In 1970 while in the US Army stationed in Bamburg, Germany I came across a book by him, "The Book on the Taboo against Knowing Who You Are" and decided to read it. I read it in one sitting and three days later I realized that I still didn't get it by suddenly realizing It for myself. In the vernacular of Zen I had a Satori experience. Fortunately for me I had just read Alan's book and so had some preparation primarily from the perspective of Advaita for what cannot be prepared for. One cannot be alert by thinking about being alert. Truth is not a state of mind but a state of being. My mind was blown out like the birthday candle of a one year old. It would be several weeks before the smoke residue of my ego would start to burn my eyes. I fell from grace but have never forgotten that what I think is not who or what I am. That the Truth cannot be realized by grabbing on to anything but nothing. A nothing that is the root of everything. I realized the Truth by becoming the Truth. The course that can be discoursed is not the eternal Course. All anyone can do for anyone where the Truth is concerned is point with an invisible finger. Point indirectly at the most direct aspect of existence. The Truth is infinitely more subtle than any joke until one gets it for oneself. Then it becomes infinitely more obvious than anything else for there is no anything else. More subtle than water to a fish. The Truth is the Truth. I AM THAT I AM.The grace of the Truth reveals itself to those that it willeth. This though the open hearted are clearly its primary target. But at the end of the day Truth is always true to Itself. Eventually everyone that is destined to awaken will, but the sequence is top secret. True cultivation is about clearing the light inhibiting clutter from one's sense of self. About seeing that our ego is not our actual self. That we are not who or what we think we are. About seeing through the whitewash façade of the World System. The mind games most of us play in a dream state of being that take things that change to be more substantial than they are. The ego is nothing more nor less than a case of mistaken identity. An appearance, not an essence. We think we are essentially our thoughts. We think too much of thinking. This world we find ourselves in is real, but it is not Real. Not Real in the eternal sense. Only that which does not change is Real. The Tao that changes is not the eternal Tao. I and the Father are One. Not one in the numerical sense, but One in the unitive sense. The Kingdom of Truth is a singularly unitive family. All wholes are greater than the sum of their seemingly separate parts. There are no Real separate parts. Truth is Organic. Those Priests of Scientism that would reduce existence down to a smallest part need to learn to turn the light around if they want to see that the Seer is the Seen. Samsara is NIrvana. That even the most spiritually enlightened statements or illustrations fall short of the Truth. A map of Idaho is not Idaho. Including the statements I make here. Words do not contain awareness. But they can sometimes trigger awareness. So I speak. Thus neither purist Advaita nor Dvaita are Absolutely True for both are relative concepts the product of the World System's Mind. Truth is beyond any true statement. There are no lines of demarcation in Nature, rather, there are merely areas of confluence. Nothing Real exists separate from the Real. Within Yin is the seed of Yang. Yin and Yang are not opposites, they are opposite non-opposites. Two seemingly separate ends of the same string theory. It is to the underlying unity of this or that that It is found. The Truth does not come by thinking about it, but by letting go of everything one thinks so that one can be what one already and always has been. Spirit for lack of a better word. Only the Truth is the Truth for there is no other Truth, otherwise it would not be the Truth but merely another truth. The only way to know the Truth is to know that one is the Truth. And the only way to know this is to be the Truth. Not to become the Truth, but to realize one already is the Truth. To recognize a Buddha one must be a Buddha. External polarities must first be grounded in Internal Unity. The sun rises in the East everyday. Truth flows to Itself because there is no where it is not already. Whether in this life or another the Truth will win out because it has already won out. John the Baptist was not like Elijah, he was Elijah. The Truth is eternal. Without beginning or end. Eternity is not eternal time. It is timeless. Unspeakable. Our body/mind complex while real enough for time is not Real enough for the Eternal. It is our Spirit given spirit that stands the test of eternity.Read Watts. Shut up. Sit down. "Be still and know that I AM God". If you truly want to dig deeper than the fake news of the World System and its legions of minions left and right take your meditation everyday whether you think you need to or not. Peace Out!Alan Watt's collected letters is both an entertaining and enlightening read.

Deeply researched and meticulously reasoned in a style that will meet academic standards while being hugely enjoyable and interesting to a general audience. Equally comfortable talking about Perry Mason and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Ed Finn surveys a broad sweep of today's business and cultural worlds while explaining how they got to be that way in a historical context reaching back centuries.―Neal Stephenson, author of Seveneves, Reamde, and Snow CrashPerhaps the greatest power in our society today―computation―remains unexamined in a cultural way. Ed Finn calls it our magic; what is present, powerful but unseen. Finn will help you see it.―Kevin Kelly, Senior Maverick, Wired magazineThe 'algorithmic imagination'―Professor Finn's evocative concept―connects the generative machine and the intelligently creative human. Think about the suggestions that appear in the search field when you begin to enter a term; that is the algorithmic imagination at work in the culture machine known as the Internet. Through a series of provocative chapters, Finn explores encounters that mark the emergence of algorithmic culture―the search for the Star Trek computer, Bitcoin, etc. He reveals the messy entanglements of these culture machines as they both draw on and shape human culture.―Anne Balsamo, Dean, School of Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication, University of Texas, DallasThis is a brilliant and important work. I know of no other book that so ably describes the cultural work that algorithms do. Once you read this you won't think of algorithms as mere batches of code that guide processes. You will see them as actors in the world.―Siva Vaidhyanathan, author of The Googlization of Everything (And Why We Should Worry)Beautifully crafted, technically lucid, and admirably precise, What Algorithms Want offers humanists a timely tutorial in the concept of the algorithm, while also offering a high-level analysis and sharp critique of algorithmic processes as they are implemented for and by us in our everyday media environments. But its true gift is the modeling of 'algorithmic reading,' a method that shows us how to become better readers―and makers―of culture and culture machines alike. Everyone who wonders 'how Netflix, Apple, or Google knows' needs to read this book.―Rita Raley, Associate Professor of English, University of California, Santa Barbara

The author talks about the networks which have a decisive role in informatics world. The author has a strong competence, when he explicates with the analysis of films the difference between action of humans and power of computers. After, the scenario sees how the the great multi-national agencies of informatics use the games for selecting the real choice in the life. All that would be truly interesting, if the failure of several trials didn't be negative around the consequences in the individual life of many operators. The bitcoins market wouldn't be much different by the context of Black-Scholes laws, so negative for the banks system in the times between 2000 and 2008.

What Algorithms Want reveals what's lurking under the surface of computers and the Internet. It's about how computer users' collective approval powers the Internet, how Bitcoin works, how film critics and other reviewers are being replaced by curators, and why the shows we watch on Netflix aren't really our choice! The author delves deep into new levels of the digital world that you never saw coming, beyond machine code, to a weird and scary place. But it's the place where we all work and play! Loved it!

Ed’s book is an interesting examination into how the machines and systems we have created are now influencing our behaviors and society at large. I recommend to anyone looking to for insight on how the digital is effecting the analog, in both positive and negative ways.(Great job, cousin Ed :-)

Fantastic. Definitely not a terribly "practical" text (which is not a problem), but if you're into theory, and are trying to conceptualize the changes that algorithmic texts are bringing to the table, you pretty much have to read this.

I listened to a library audio version of the book -- which is probably considerably more difficult to do than reading the text versions, given Mr. Finn's embellished, somewhat excited writing style. He is quite enthusiastic about the IT/programming/computational field, but, then again, so are many (most?) of its participants. My adult life overlaps the time immediately before, and long after, the major growth periods of the personal CPU and Internet industries so I was able to watch what the industries basically accomplished in real time; i.e., automate and consolidate much (not all, by any means) of the every day tasks/every day activities that people have previously carried out much more laboriously and individually, with much replication of effort. That's pretty much it -- and that's great and quite useful (labor- and time-saving), but it is not as grand and imaginatively generative as Mr. Finn and the 'Titans of Technology' make it out to be. Individual insight, imagination, and problem-solving ability have in no way yet been supplanted by algorithm automation. Algorithms established through human observation, imagination, and insight -- efficient or inefficient -- are what people do (follow) and always have done (followed). Computers have just centralized much of this work and non-work activity, and thus reduced its short-term cost to the individual. (So far, however, overall net economic productivity hasn't seen that much of a boost from this algorithm automation, so possibly the benefits of the computer age innovations are largely being diverted towards relatively non-productive uses like entertainment and self-grooming. See the bandwidth used by Netflix users, as reported by Mr. Finn.)

What Algoriths Want describes the power of computerized algorithms in our Internet+ Age; a time, beginning in the 21st century, in which the Internet plus (+) attendant software (algorithms, the cloud, Google, etc.) and hardware (computers, smartphones, sensors, etc.) dominate all aspects of life. Finn tells us not to fear or worship the algorithm but rather to see it as “a new player, collaborator, and interlocutor” and use the algorithm and other Internet+ Age technologies for change and betterment. In my view, that’s good advice.I’ve given What Algorithms Want 4 stars rather than 5 because, consistent with the scientific/biological foundations of all things human Biosociology: Bridging the Biology-Sociology Divide, only mothers “love” their newborns; otherwise the human species would not, could not, continue. No one else “loves” anybody else--and no one “loves” a book or any other thing. "Hate" should also be removed from Amazon’s book rating scale. No one should “hate” anything or anybody. No Enemies, No Hatred: Selected Essays and Poems

A must-read for anyone (college level or beyond) interested in the pervasive power and accompanying "mythologies" of the "Computer Age." It is written across disciplines and is, therefore, equally accessible to those in the Humanities and the Sciences. A great contribution to the growing conversation about our computer-driven world!

Ok

Kate Morton is a master at transporting you to another time and place and creating rich, layered, and believable characters. The Secret Keeper is a wonderful mix of mystery and historical fiction and has more of a modern feel than most of her other novels, both in writing style and setting. It's not set in a grand estate, rather WWII is the setting that acts as character. The 1940s contains the answers to the family mystery that "started" in the 1960s, which a daughter is trying to solve in the present day 2011. Morton jumps between time periods and writes from multiple characters' perspectives seamlessly. This book had a slower build for me than her other novels. Early on it felt destined to be my least favorite of her stories, but by the end it became the one I arguably appreciate most. It definitely won a place in my heart and permanent shelf. It took some time for me to become absorbed in the story, though the characters of Dolly, Vivien and Jimmy were intriguing from the start. However, the last third of the novel is un-put-downable. There is a sort of sinking feeling you get as the story unfolds and you learn more about the characters and ruminate on their futures. However, by the end of the novel this weight is lightened as you realize everyone's role in the family mystery. I've always loved how Morton is able to craft multiple mysteries and surprises. In this novel her ability to mix hints and red herrings was top-notch and kept me guessing and second guessing. I was able to predict some pieces correctly but they weren't obvious, which is a common frustration with many novels. She masterfully gives you enough to develop theories yet question them continually, leaves other pieces as true mysteries to keep you intrigued, and still manages to completely shock you with a surprise or two that fit wonderfully rather than feeling contrived. A slower build, but an incredibly satisfying finale that left me wanting to go back and re-read to pick up on all the clues and reacquaint myself with these characters I grew to understand, sympathize with, and in many ways, love.

Kate Morton demonstrated a great talent for getting into the heads of her characters and understanding their motivations. Her descriptions of both the tough and vulnerable characteristics of Dolly, Vivien and Jimmy kept me wanting to know more about them. I found myself drawn back to visit with them when I really was supposed to be otherwise engaged. At first I thought this would be an easy read, and I read casually. As time went on, I realized that the story was more complex than I had given it credit, and I started paying closer attention. I'm glad I did. While I am often frustrated because I figure out the ending of many novels long before I get there, I was very taken and surprised by the end. It is the best kind of novel that gives a full sense of closure and understanding at the end. Kudos to you, Ms Morton! I will be reading her other titles soon.

This is one of my favorite books of all-time! I enjoyed The Lake House a lot, but I this was even better! The characterization was amazing and I felt like I 'knew' all of the people in this book. This book was full of mystery, romance and plot twists, as well as a bit of history! I found myself thinking about it long after I had quit reading it for the day, trying to figure out what was going on and how it was going to end.

I had just completed another Kate Morton title, The Forgotten Garden, and wanted another rich and detailed read. I couldn't put down "Garden," and loved it more than any other book in the last month or so. So, I ordered The Secret Keeper. What I found was that unlike Garden, Secret Keeper had a bit of a 'depressing' feel to it I couldn't quite shake. Not bad, not morbid or distasteful, but something I couldn't put my hand on. Maybe it was 'my mood.' Sometimes you aren't that into reading anything. But I believe that wasn't it. I found the past and present narratives just a hint confusing, too. I had to remember who was who with the minor characters, even though, as with every other Kate Morton title, they were richly developed. I loved some of them a great deal, including Jimmy's dad. The other two 'dads' got a little confusing, as they seemed to be the same man in different eras. Different nations, even.World War II was a character in the book, and I felt the shakiness (emotional and physical) of the time in Dorothy's chapters. Morton does this especially well. Her historical detail is outstanding! I liked Jimmy, but felt his background didn't remain 'true' throughout the tales. He seemed to be too 'sophisticated' by the final chapters, which made me like him more. I do understand that he was described by Dorothy, but the point is, Dorothy was from a similar background. In the Vivian chapters he was not the very low income boy from those earlier chapters. Vivian would have noticed, I think, and probably commented on it a little at first. That threw a monkey-wrench into the 'willing suspension of disbelief.' Ditto the author husband of Vivian's descriptions.Mostly, I felt there were 'too many' characters to hold on to. THAT made it harder to fall in to each narration. Great characters, but a LOT of 'em. Large families, mostly. But also a play with too many 'parts.'So, even though I really LIKED this book, I think it might have been better with a bit of editing. Now, don't ask me who I'd have gotten of...but may be a few of the background characters might have been just that, background. Kate Morton develops these 'snapshots' of people in varied times, which she does almost TOO well! So, a 4, not a 5. Even a 4.5.

Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY, originally published in 1942, is one of two classic mythological summaries most readily available to us today. The other (and older of the two) is by Thomas Bulfinch; it was published in the early 19th century and is commonly called BULFINCH'S MYTHOLOGY (a merger of three works originally published separately as THE AGE OF FABLE, THE AGE OF CHIVALRY, and LEGENDS OF CHARLEMAGNE). Both authors present a summary overview of myths once widely taught but now generally neglected. Bulfinch is much more extensive and includes numerous legends not covered by Hamilton, but the coverage by both of the Greek and Roman myths (for which the two authors are most famous) makes for particularly interesting comparison. Some prefer Hamilton's treatment; others prefer Bulfinch's. I personally prefer Hamilton's consistent use of distinct Greek and Roman names rather than Bulfinch's frequent and occasionally confusing use of Roman names to identify Greek entities. But I generally enjoy Bulfinch's slightly old-fashioned style of storytelling over Hamilton's (though, all things considered, hers is quite fine). Hamilton's work is still under copyright, and it is published only by Little, Brown. Thus, it is more expensive than Bulfinch's which, being in the public domain, is easily obtainable online for free or in very inexpensive editions by numerous ebook publishers. Those who may own older paperback or hardcovered editions of Hamilton's work will discover the 2012 ebook replaces the magnificent artwork of Steele Savage with somewhat less majestic illustrations by Chris Wormell (though the list of illustration topics remains the same). The text remains unaltered, and the formatting is exquisite. There is an active TOC (here at the very end), but (disappointingly) no index in the ebook version. Overall, it is a very handsome ebook and a delight to read.It is hard to imagine retelling the great myths in a manner more concisely informative than rendered here by Hamilton. Critical reviewers who claim she is too difficult or too dry are certainly entitled to their opinions, but given the nature of the material and the purpose of this book, I would respectfully disagree with them. There is, of course, no substitute for reading the full-length originals from which these great tales have been culled and summarized, but this is by far a much more convenient way to initially encounter them; that is why this book has been (or, at least, once was) heavily used in public schools in conjunction with teaching these timeless stories.Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY belongs in the personal library of every literate person as an introduction to, summary of, and/or reminder of these Greek, Roman, and Norse myths. But for added insights and additional myths, I would encourage readers of it to also obtain and read BULFINCH'S MYTHOLOGY.

I have to say, I'm disappointed I didn't discover Edith Hamilton sooner. I loved every moment of this book. It focuses mainly on Greek mythology, although there is a brief section on Norse mythology at the end. I appreciate that she lists her sources for each story at the beginning of the chapter and her telling of the these myths are easily read, but not over simplified and the result is highly enjoyable.

In grammar school I studied Greek mythology, and was mesmerized by the Odyssey and the Iliad. Soon other subjects came along that stole my attention. Fast-forward fifty years and I found myself curious to see if my old fascination and excitement about Greek mythology could be rekindled, and I once again I started slowly and tucked into Edith Hamilton's Mythology. I found this book to be as alive and vibrant as I remembered, but I'm thrilled to say that as an adult I appreciate it even more. It's mind-boggling that having been published in 1942, this is still one of the best interpretations around. One thing I hadn't remembered is that Ms. Hamilton's Mythology includes sections on Roman and Norse stories; I had no interest in them when I was younger and only middling interest in them now, but they're a happy find. This book stokes the imagination and invites further study of the subject. I bought the Kindle ebook and Kindle audiobook versions; both are outstanding. I wish I could give this more than 5 stars!

This 75th Anniversary Edition does not disappoint. My introduction to mythology happened more than 50 years ago when my librarian Aunt Louise gave me The Golden Treasury of Myths and Legends by Anne Terry White and Alice and Martin Provensen (a classic itself). I moved on to an early 60s edition of Edith Hamilton's Mythology, entranced with the family trees of the gods and using her description of the Underworld to make a model when I took Latin. Also became a fan of the D'Aulaires' mythology books. My interest and background in mythology have served me well as an English major, grad student, parent, school librarian, and lifelong heavy reader. Now retired, I'm taking a class at our Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at North Carolina State University on mythology. I decided I needed to upgrade my old favorite. The 75th Anniversary edition is beautifully designed, a pleasure to read and hold. Illustrations include plates, page drawings, design motifs, and borders. Anyone with a longstanding or brand-new interest in Greek mythology will be dazzled. Highly recommended.

Classic text that was required reading in High School. Loved it then, but sadly I plastered my paperback with the names of girls I was dating at the time. The Kindle version is perfect - different illustrations than the book (I also have the hardcover) but just as good. Hamilton's prose style is borderline "quaint" but adds a nice personal touch. The lack of commas in places may require a couple reads of some sentences. Even so I highly recommend Mythology as it covers both Greek, Roman, along with teaser Norse mythology.

I have always loved Greek and Roman mythology, and have bought so many different books over the years trying to find a comprehensive, easy to read, well formatted version of the myths. This is by far the best collection that I have found yet. All previous collections have left me feeling disappointed. This is not a strict translation of the myths, but is a retelling of them in easy to read modern language. This collection is easy to read, covers all of the majors Greek and Roman myths, and is very logically laid out. I highly recommend.

This is a highly entertaining adaptation of the Ring on the Nibelung. The artwork is excellent, the coloring appropriate. If you like historically important stories and/or modern comics and have any interest in the other, or their fusion, then you could do a lot worse than checking out this book. It's huge and beautiful and fun.The other recommendation I would make is to use this to introduce others to mythologies, such as getting kids to take an interest in older stories.

This adaptation of Wagner’s Ring cycle is an excellent and worthy way of conveying the story to a different kind of reader. The drawings capture the nuances of the epic in a delicate way, and the exceptional programming of the Kindle version, taking the reader through the story frame by frame, enhances the reading pleasure immensely. I can only imagine that Wagner would have been proud to be associated with this version.

I ordered this last year, and it was stolen. This year, I found one at my door left in a bag. Was it the stolen one? I dunno. If so, all I can figure is that someone saw a box from Amazon in front of my door, figured it was, like, a game console or DVD boxed set or something, and after they took it, opened it and went, "What the !@#% is a Nibelung?" Then they looked at it and saw that it was a comic book and they thought, "Eh, I'll give it to my nephew, he likes comics." Then they found out it was an adaptation of an opera. And they were like "#!$!, worst stolen item EVER!!" And then they forgot about it and then found it in their closet and gave it back. That's just supposition. It's a beautiful book that I've wanted for years.

I had the comics for Rhinegold and Valkyre and Siegfried and Twilight of the Gods in the Paperback vol 2. I actually read this and Roy Thomas and Hil Kane's graphic novel on The Ring to prepare me for watching the massive MET opera by Maestro Levine. And now it's nice to have this high quality hardback with quality paper + extras to commemorate this great artistic achievement. I am stunned the book was only $18 for a 400+ page color graphic novel. Do not know how they can possibly make a profit on this book. Highly recommended.

I bought this for my 9yr old son whom I'd been struggling to instill a love of books in. I finally discovered he likes graphic novels, as many boys do. While taking a philosophy we discussed the deeper meaning of this book, and to my surprise I found it in graphic novel form. How cool that both my son and I can enjoy and discuss a graphic novel together!! It's a great buy! Definitely recommend!

How to handle a complex classic in a manner to explain all the interactions, plot lines, and motives of the characters ... this graphic novel certainly does it. Just be aware that the cover art is of higher quality than the illustrations inside. The Ring of the Nibelung is one of my favorites, but because the opera is in German, I did not always catch what was going on. Now I do.

Russell has done it again, breathing new life into Wagner's story by translating it into a contemporary visual medium. His visual style always works well in fantasies, so it makes the ideal vehicle for a story like this. Staging it to the fullest would be nearly impossible, with its varied surrounds of mountains, meadows, rainstorms, caves and more. Imagery on paper supports these scenes in ways that would be nearly impossible for stagecraft. The story comes through strongly, too. And what a story - the operatic style in music is an acquired taste, and many younger readers won't have taken the time to acquire it. As a result, they might not have heard of the swindling gods, taunting Rhinemaidens, lovestruck valkyrie, incestuous relations, and other seedy goings-on. More than just the adventure of the story, there's a whole soap opera (if you'll pardon the term) in play. And, who knows? The gorgeous art and thrilling story might even tempt someone to give a listen to some of Wagner's incredible music.-- wiredweird

Really great graphic comic book version of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungen. I had a different paperback version, but it was not nearly as thick and detailed as this hardcover version. To me, this is a collectors item, yet I obtained this one inexpensively--a former library book. No comic book kid is going to wade through this, but an adult Wagnerian will be very amused. Put on your headphones and peruse.

If you love books about how to be an even better leader, and you appreciate authors who go deep to be clear, and also stay relevant and concise, then you'll love this book as much as I do. I own three editions of The Leadership Challenge. Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner continue to provide the best advice for leaders and developing leaders. I highly recommend the book for this reason. There's one more reason that I personally love the sixth edition of this book: the attention to me, the reader. The book is thinner and easier to hold than the last. The quality of the cover and pages is enchanting. Highlighting of chapter pages makes it easy to go back to for reference, which I do!

The Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner is a true classic. It's been validated by case studies, assessments and leaders around the world. It is cited in most major studies of leadership. It is both simple and complex, revealing layers of depth for dedicated students and practitioners of leadership. The sixth edition brings the Kouzes/Posner evidence-based framework of leadership to life in all new ways. New stories, new research findings, and new 4-color graphics show the power of simple behavioral changes leaders at any level can make. The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, the author's model that is based on millions of actual leader assessments, have changed many lives around the world, including mine. Reading others' stories inspires readers to take the plunge and liberate the leader inside themselves. For those already steeped in this work, this edition is very shareable with clear and compelling illustrations to showcase important research. For those who are new to leadership development, there simply isn't a better starting point. It's impossible to read this book without recognizing yourself in it and being stirred to stretch toward your fullest potential.

The authors have updated their classic leadership book to address all the current challenges leaders face today in a world of growing distrust, the resulting loss of credibility at the executive levels, relationship building, retention of top talent, leading through disruption and change. The authors deliver quality work once again, based on practical experience from their consulting work and solid research. I enjoy practical books with actionable ideas; this book "fits the bill." Highly Recommended.

My pastor recommended this book to me because of some voluntary duties I had recently taken on at church. While reading the book, I could understand how leaders are everywhere even if they are not bestowed with an official title. The authors help the reader understand that leaders are made and that leaders come in all shapes and sizes. Anyone who is an a managerial position really should read this book and take up the leadership challenge to move from managing to leading. You don't need to work in a business office to take advantage of the leadership challenge. The content is clear, easy to understand and free of jargon, so anyone can read the Leadership Challenge and start working on becoming a leader..

The Leadership Challenge: How to Make Extraordinary Things Happen in Organizations (J-B Leadership Challenge: Kouzes/Posner) I am using this as a required text in a design management graduate course titled Collaboration, Culture, and Leadership. It is a superb book, well organized and deep enough to cover the ideas with rigor. Any book that survives to a sixth edition has something going for it, and this text is a keeper.

The sixth edition of this classic of leadership literature is just as impactful as the third edition, which I had as a text in graduate school. I used this for a course I'm piloting this semester and the content kept the students thoroughly engaged.

Almost every paragraph in this book had me underline something. This was required for a course I took and I will read it again! So good!! The concepts in here are useful not just for the workplace, but for all of life. Very well communicated and they give good points of view from experienced people who have put these principles into practice.

I really enjoyed this book. Author is amazing, check him out on YouTube before you buy the book.
