Enjoyed the book. Not an academically heavy text, but rather one woman's experiences with and insights into the world of contemporary Shi'ia women in the United States. The book is emotional, highly personal and engaging. Provides a focus on the intergenerational exploration of Shi'ia women in both their public and private lives. Highly relevant to today's world.
The title of the book should be renamed as 'My Journey into the rituals of the Westernized Liberal Shia Muslim Women'.I gave it 2 starts because I'll also gave the author the benefit of the doubt that she might have had a good intention in writing this book.The book portrays Shia Muslim women as liberal and focused more on the ritual form of commemorating the martyrdom of the grandson of the prophet of Islam rather than informed and arduous worshippers.Due to her language barrier Ms. Bloomfield was mostly acquainted with the young English speaking girls who identify themselves as Shia however they appeared mostly to be Westernized liberals.When writing about her trip to India she once again looks for the same type of girls who perform 'azadari' more as a ritual than a form of worship in its true sense.While reading the book I realized that the author had a keen focus on the fashion sense of the girls she interacted with and how 'Western' they were which probably made her feel more comfortable to be amidst them.As I read, I kept hoping the author will write about the Shia women who had a deep understanding of 'azadari' but the entirw focus was mainly on the method or rituals of azadari and how Western the girls were (though she did not outright say it, it did however appear that way).Towards the end when she travels to Iran she writes she is fed up of 'twelver Shiaism' while there and eventually identifies herself as a Sufi (Not a Shia).If anyone wants to know of the real Shia women and not just seasonal Shias, should not base their judgement on this book.I was very disappointed at how the Shia women were portrayed.
In this book, the author presents an instructive view of Shi'a Muslim women in a conservative religious school in L.A. Though she begins as an educated stranger in a strange land, she becomes close to the women and the community, dressing as they dress, eating, socializing, and worshiping with them. It's clear that she's sincere and eager to learn. She's respectful to the culture, inextricable from its religion; she’s receptive to grandmothers, to adult women of different nationality and economic status, and to the little children in her Arabic class. She learns from everyone. She informs us non-scholars about the stories of the holy family, the ritual of tears, other ritual terms, social customs, and public and private dress. I especially enjoyed the range of Muslim women she writes about: from Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, and IndiaDoctors, educators, housewives. College students--Americanized, but still devout and obedient to their culture. The book reads like a personal essay, with simple, direct prose. I was moved by a researcher with such an open heart.
This book offers a rare glimpse into the world of Shi'i women, who like their male counterparts, offer unique understandings and individualized interpretations of the broad religion of Shi'i Islam. The book is written in a very casual manner which made reading it enjoyable and easy. There was some discussion on the doctrinal and historical aspects of Shiism, however the primary focus was on how the women she met and interviewed personally internalized key concepts of their faith. Several other, more academic, books in this genre would be Gender, Sainthood, and Everyday Practice in South Asian Shi'ism by Karen G. Ruffle, An Enchanted Modern: Gender and Public Piety in Shi'i Lebanon by Lara Deeb, and Partners of Zaynab: A Gendered Perspective of Shia Muslim Faith by Diane D'Souza. I would recommend The Language of Tears to both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
