Benjamin Dreyer is vice president, executive managing editor and copy chief, of Random House. He began his publishing career as a freelance proofreader and copy editor. In 1993, he became a production editor at Random House, overseeing books by writers including Michael Chabon, Edmund Morris, Suzan-Lori Parks, Michael Pollan, Peter Straub, and Calvin Trillin. He has copyedited books by authors including E. L. Doctorow, David Ebershoff, Frank Rich, and Elizabeth Strout, as well as Let Me Tell You, a volume of previously uncollected work by Shirley Jackson. For those who do editing, this book offers useful guidance, covering topics in a clever, snarky way. I finally know when to capitalize (or not capitalize) an entry after a colon: Use a capital if the entry is a complete sentence; otherwise, not (e.g., lists). And curious items on the use of B.C. and A.D.; or when or when not to write out numbers.Oddly, the text is often clunky or irritating because the author too often tries to be amusing. I'm on chapter 7 and have already found some copy-editing errors (odd, since the author claims to be so attentive, and his list of thanks at the end of the book goes on for 8 pages--with this many interested parties, one would think someone would have spotted the blunders). The most annoying feature of the book relates to the footnotes: First, there are many too many and their font size is much too small; second, many of the footnotes are smart aleck and unnecessary; third, the symbols for the footnotes are tiny, tiny asterisks, crossbars, and double crossbars that are difficult to see as one is reading, with the result that, getting to the bottom of a page, one realizes there are yet more notes not read because the reader hasn't seen the minuscule symbol to which the note refers. Highly annoying and out of sync with the author's emphasis on verbal clarity and visual appropriateness.Just read chapter 7, "The Realities of Fiction," and am becoming irritated: If we trust what's said here, most writers are oblivious and dumb. Odd that a copy editor is making such claims. One begins to realize why most copy editors never make it as writers. If you want a better recent book on writing and editing, I recommend Mary Norris's BETWEEN YOU AND ME (Norton, 2015)--clearer, more graceful, and more enticing.

Others have noted that this book is useful and entertaining. So it is. I might have given it five stars if I owned it in paper, but I don't. I have the Kindle version, in which the footnotes are maddening. You can't easily get to them one by one and collectively they just read like extensions of each section's text. Their content should have been incorporated into the chapters. I don't see a reason for single footnote in the whole frustrating thing. What were they thinking? Dunno.

And great fun to read.Mr. Dreyer is a copy editor, and clearly loves the English language, American flavored.I was an English major in college, went on to law school, and devoured books on clear writing. I hope that my Reviews show a bit of evidence that those efforts were not in vain.I returned time after time to Fowler and for legal matters the Harvard Blue Book.Dreyer's book belongs in that pantheon. Consider his essay on "unique". As a stamp collector, I've cringed time after time when one of my fellow collectors used and overused that word to describe one of their treasures in their exhibits.Here is Dreyer's take:VERY UNIQUE In the 1906 edition of The King’s English, H. W. Fowler declared—and he was neither the first nor the last person to so declare—“A thing is unique, or not unique; there are no degrees of uniqueness; nothing is ever somewhat or rather unique, though many things are almost or in some respects unique.”I will allow that something can be virtually unique, though many things are almost or in some respects unique.” I will allow that something can be virtually unique but can’t be more than—not very, not especially, not really—unique. You might as well hang a KICK ME sign on your writing.*12My editor wants me to tell you here never to use the words “yummy,” “panties,” or “guac.” Mission accomplished.Dreyer, Benjamin. I love the essays she writes about life, writing and her philosophical insights into what it is to be human.

We studied this book in our Sunday School class and it was very interesting. It collects a lot of Ms Le Guin's writing and is very thought provoking and engaging.

Dancing at the End of the World - Ursula K. Le Guin [2014-03-10 513] "Dancing at the End of the World" (1989) is a collection of essays, talks, reviews and some travel notes by the highly esteemed author Ursula K. Le Guin. For many years I have greatly admired her novels particularly "The Lathe of Heaven". I am cautiously optimistic that by reading non-fiction books by authors I hold in high esteem I may become more nuanced in my appreciation of their fiction. I sought out this book because I had reviewed the table of contents on the ISFDB (Internet Science Fiction Data Base) and I greatly desired to read a couple of items - a book review of a C.S. Lewis collection and an essay titled "Where Do you Get Your Ideas From". Both readings were informative but the essay was of particularly interest. To summarize ideas flow up from the subconscious and are an amalgamation of life experiences. I surveyed the book from cover to cover sampling a page or two from each entry. To be honest, with one exception, and the two pieces noted I passed on the other writings. The unexpected gem of this book for this reader was a diary like essay about Ms. LeGuin's experiences during filming of her novel "The Lathe of Heaven" - note the 1980 version! Very interesting and informative indeed to this reader since I was not previously aware it had be make into a movie and as it turns out twice - but that's another story altogether.

Written as if on a vacation in the form of bad female poetry. Not worth it.

I had never read a word of Ursula K. Le Guin until I recently picked up "Dancing at the Edge of the World," a chronologically arranged collection of essays, talks and book reviews written by Le Guin during the period 1976 through 1988. It is a collection that is intended, in the author's words, "[to] provide a sort of mental biography, a record of responses to ethical and political climates, of the transforming effect of certain literary ideas, and of the changes of a mind."Each of the essays listed in the table of contents is denoted with a glyph that categorizes the essay as dealing with feminism, social responsibility, literature, or travel. This categorization gives the reader a good idea of the range of the collection and of Le Guin's interests, which extend far beyond the science fiction genre for which she is most well known.The quality of the essays is uneven. Some of the travel pieces are soporific ("Places Names," "Along the Platte" and "Over the Hills and a Great Way Off"), although they might be more interesting to readers who have been to the places Le Guin describes. Other pieces seem to suffer from the loss caused by transforming what were originally spoken presentations into writing. The feminist writings in some cases are the victim of changing times. What is useful, however, even in these weaker pieces, are Le Guin's introductions, which provide a useful contextual background that helps the reader understand the import of the essay.While some of the essays are unremarkable, there also are several exceptional writings that are worth the price of admission. I refer, in particular, to the 1988 essay, "The Fisherman's Daughter," which provides a provocative and interesting discussion of women and writing, a text that follows in the line from Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own" through Tillie Olsen's "Silences," drawing heavily on both authors for another view of this much discussed literary/feminist theme. I also refer to the essays from 1986, a very good year for Le Guin insofar as the six essays included here from that year all provide interesting and worthwhile glimpses at why her writing is so well regarded. In particular, I enjoyed "Bryn Mawr Commencement Address" and "Text, Silence, Performance," two essays that illuminate the ways in which spoken and written language, and the privileging of certain communicative forms over others, affects the world.Despite the shortcomings of some of its essays, "Dancing at the Edge of the World" provides a fascinating picture of Le Guin's worldview, successfully painting the "mental biography" of one of America's more interesting and accomplished writers during one decade of her life.

Around pp. 165-167, in the essay "The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction," LeGuin discusses the possibility that the first human invention was not the weapon, but the container -- the sling, the sack, the bag, the carrier. (I remembered it as "the vessel," but that term doesn't appear in the book.) What good is generating a lot of stuff to eat if you don't have any way to get it back to camp? She argues the point persuasively and passionately.I read this book in 1991 or 1992, nearly 20 years ago. I've not seen the idea anywhere else (although she cites an anthropologist writing in 1975) but it has shaped my perception since. Not to diminish the rest of the book, but this single idea in this one essay is, I believe, worth getting the whole book for.

This was an author I had never heard of before, but I grabbed it among the other 25 from the high school library where I used to teach. I found the book to be a very mixed bag of some interesting pieces--the names piece in traveling across Us, some of the poetry, the Mills college graduation speech among them. But too many of them i just really couldn't get into. In checking some info on the author, i see she has done some great things which I agree with in many fields and she lives in my favorite US town (our daughter also lives in Portland). But I still cannot rank this book higher than a 3 (personally)

This author embraces all of her sister's qualities as experience arising in excellance. She is a wonderful writer clear and simple.

The book is an obvious printing of a snippet of a website. Rife with spelling mistakes, and a complete lack of original thought. Save yourself the money and skip this "book." I genuinely can't believe Amazon would allow someone to sell this garbage. There's no proper explanation of the examples, no practical use cases. It's like reading a tutorial written by a child for a 3rd grade project. Most of the code is simply cited from another source, with possibly enough information to find it using Google.

This is so much more than a history of Kit Carson. This isn't a history of innocent Native Americans being victimized by evil white people. This is a complicated portrait of a man who both lived like a Native American, married and had children with a Native American and ruthlessly slaughtered Native Americans. This is the story of the real West, not a romanticized version of Indians or the Americans who settled the West.

This is a great book about how the West opened and closed at the same time. The reason we as a culture deify this time period, is because the most unlikely of souls, like Kit Carson, find the space and time to become great men and achieve great things, which could never happen in the strangulated East. Also, it is the only time in which men capable of recording events met with native peoples at their height just before the induced decline. The author does a great job of balancing perspective, which is tricky given the subject matter. This is an ugly time in history. I personally found the balanced perspective well handled.

Remember the old Tonight Show when Ed or Johnny would drop a factoid and the other would reply "I.did.not.know. that!"? Found myself doing that a lot as I read this even though I thought I knew a good bit about this historical period. Details related to the Mexican War, Western settlement, Civil War, Indian Wars, and the Fremont expeditions I thought I had down but was continually impressed as the story emerged. Kit Carson I was only slightly familiar with but sure know him a lot better now. Fascinating material, told from a variety of viewpoints and perspectives and written in a novelistic style that held my attention. If my history books were this well done in my school days I think I would have been a heck of a lot better at staying awake. Great book by Sides, one of my favorites of the year.

My knowledge of the history of our Western expansion and, in particular, our dealings with Native Americans is very limited. In the last year I've taken steps to correct that deficiency by reading a few excellent histories in that subject area. This book does a great deal to help with my ignorance. It is an excellent treatment that is both engaging, well written, and thought provoking. Its focus is primarily on Northern New Mexico and the Four Corners area and while it is a history of that area it is also a rather full biography of Kit Carson. One of the reasons I enjoyed the book was because my wife and I have enjoyed a few vacations in this area. It is always fascinating to read about how places that you've visited had a role in the history of that area. In any event this book, like others I have recently read illustrates what a sad period of our history this is. The clash of two cultures and the search for a reasonable solution. On the one hand the primitive and violent Native American people that had no written language, little art, no architecture and absolutely no authoritative governing structure. These people had a way of life as hunter-gatherers and raiders that was unchanged for unknown numbers of generations. Opposing them were the encroaching Whites who were vastly more advanced technologically but were not so far removed from their primitive natures that it couldn't be resorted to in short order. Neither side had any understanding of the other and resort to violence was the usual result of this ignorance. Carson seems to have a better insight than most based on his years of association with various Indian tribes. His epiphany, however, occurs only after decades of exploits bathed in blood and scalps. The truth is that this culture clash was an example of cultural Darwinism. Unless the Native population could adapt and evolve to meet the changing times they were doomed to extinction. Of course the Indians abhorred change and revered the "Old Ways" and their traditions so change could only come by force. After reading this book I started to wonder how our native peoples might have evolved had the whites left them alone; if Gene Roddenbury's invention of "Star Trek's" Prime Directive had been in force and adhered to. Of course the same speculation could be made for the people of sub-Saharan Africa as well. But that was never to happen. The European tribes evolved more quickly and in different ways and overran the planet infecting these less advanced cultures who either joined the parade or got stamped into the earth. Unfortunately, that was the fate of the Native Americans. If there was a more reasonable solution to be had at that time I can't see what it might have been.

Very good. Well-written and comprehensive. I had always viewed the Navajos as a peaceful, agrarian people. This book demonstrates their history as warriors. Also provides nuance on the role of Kit Carson as an Indian fighter and the nature of the conflicts from that era generally. My only criticism is that the book could have used some maps to make it better. Interesting insights on the Anasazi and the other tribes in the southwest as well. Highly recommended.

A very comprehensive history of the conquering of the west and southwestern United States. By using Kit Carson as the focus of the book the history takes on a personal aspect and examines the life of one of the frontier's greatest mountain men. Having traveled and explored much of the Southwest myself I could easily see the places that Sides was describing, whether his reference was modern or from the 19th century. Sides is an honest historian and doesn't hide from the shameful acts perpetrated against the Native Americans. Neither does he portray the Native Americans as blame free. or characterize them as the "noble savage". For me, this was as good as a history read gets.

I gave this book 5 stars because it was a very interesting book to read and it was hard to put down. I liked the author's style of writing. The fact that he tried to make all of these people that are part of our history reachable to the reader as real people, something that we can understand, in real time as much as possible made the reading so interesting, as if you were there, watching history unfold. He did a good job in writing it . It's very interesting. If you're interested in the American Wild West, as it was called, or stories about Kit Carson , the Indian "wars," etc, it's a good book to read, worthy of your time.

I felt compelled to write this review because of how much this book helped me... (sorry for all the details, if you want the to-the-point version read the bullet points below...)For 9 months, I nursed my son for naps and bedtime. This worked out fine for us because he would fall asleep fairly quickly and I enjoyed the bonding time. At around 9 months, my son's sleeping habits changed (as many warned me they would). He is a very active baby and loves to play. I would nurse him and then he would jump out of my arms, and head toward his toys. I knew he was sleepy, but he wouldn't sleep. I tried many things such as putting him in the car, the stroller, tiring him out as much as possible... you name it. I finally was able to get him to sleep by putting him in my ergo carrier and walking up and down the street. This was fine, but still wasn't something I wanted to do every day, twice a day. I was frustrated and felt like I couldn't figure it out. I tried the cry-it-out (CIO) method, and soon discovered it wasn't for me. I turned to the internet and researched and researched and every no-cry method led me to Elizabeth Pantley. I researched her website and many other sites relating to her, but I couldn't find details on this magical solution... At first I did not want to buy the book because #1 I didn't really have time to read a book, and #2 I had the "what is the book going to tell me that I don't already know?" attitude. I had already made up my mind that my son is just not a napper... Finally after several weeks of no naps, I gave in and bought the book, and I am so happy I did. Here is why it's great -- It is not one magical solution (as I thought), but many different solutions based on the problem you are having. She covers many problems in her book, including the ones I was having.- It is organized in a very efficient way, so you don't have to read the entire book and you can just go to the section that relates to you. I do suggest reading the intro chapters, because she goes over information regarding sleep cycles, that helps you understand your baby's sleep a little more (i.e. how many naps they need based on age, how many awake hours between naps, how long babies should nap for).- It is good to have the book around because our babies' sleep routines change all the time (at least mine do) and as they get older, they may develop a different problem.- The book is written in a very gentle and helpful manner. Many other reviewers say that she is like a friend and very supportive of how each mom does things individually. She says that it's not a problem, unless it is a problem to you... which is great to hear because we always hear about how we SHOULD be doing this or that. I felt like she was my good friend helping me discover why my son is not napping and then finding solutions.- She has little worksheets with questions and charts to use if you want to record the sleep patterns. I simply reviewed the questions (which helped me with discovering what I was missing) and I kept my own log for about 2 weeks, just to see if there was any patterns.- I was able to get through the book in about a day, and had many AHA! moments. I immediately took action, and in about 2-3 days, my son was napping on his own, and napping for longer than 30 minutes (which was one of my problems).In summary, I got what I wanted out of this book... A quick way for me to get my son to nap. In addition, I got a lot of other helpful information.If you are interested, I will highlight a couple of things that helped me -- I learned how to read my baby's sleep cues. I realized I was putting him down for a nap much later than I should have been. I used to think, "he can't take a nap now, he barely just woke up... " but now I know better... as soon as he gives me a yawn, or rubs his eyes... off to bed he goes.- I learned to wind him down before putting him in the crib. They cannot go from playing, straight to the crib, they need to wind down. What I do is walk my son around the house with some classical music playing on my phone and say goodnight to all the furniture... it may sound silly, but it works!- I made my son's crib more comfortable and cozy... I bought softer bed sheets and a mattress cover which was slightly padded.These are just a few of the things, based on my problems. if you are having trouble, buy this book! You will find your solution, and you will get your sanity back!!!

Great as a reference guide. Not every baby is the same or will respond to the same methods, but I love that this book acknowledges that and offers tips/advice on dealing with situations. It's great to try these methods out if you're unsure of what to do and how to prevent resorting to the CIO. Highly recommend. And, get the version for your phone/eBook. You don't want to be reading a textbook in the dark in your baby's room, rather just scroll through your iphone instead!

I did a lot of research to figure out the best way to get our 4 month old to start sleeping in his crib independently instead of having to be rocked/walked/danced to sleep and then only sleeping in our arms. I decided to go with the no tears approach and ordered this book along with the no-cry sleep solution. It takes a bit longer than any kind of cry it out approach, but I can happily say my little one is sleeping in his crib right now. We're still working on putting him down awake, but using the tips in both of these books, we've come a long way and with minimal crying. If you're looking for a gentle sleep training solution and are willing to put in a bit more time and patience, Pantley's methods are a wonderful choice.

Complicated and time consuming techniques, but they worked well for my baby. Perfect for the parent who is willing to spend time helping their baby feel safe and secure sleeping. Perfect for the parent that does not want to let their baby "cry it out".

I really wanted this to work, of course it's going to take time. It's been about 6 weeks and she's getting a LITTLE better. I guess that's progress but is it because of all of this? Not sure. It was a good read and lots of great information. I would buy it again and I'm sure I'll read it again. Get it and see what you think, it's worth a shot and it's well written. Elizabeth Pantley is very non judgmental and helpful. I'm just not sure that having a clingy child who sleeps very light and has excellent hearing is addressed as well as I would have liked to see. :)

If you already read the "No cry sleep solution" then don't waste money on this one - you won't learn much new info.Overall though - it's a good read for those who haven't read the other sleep book.

This book has been a lifesaver for us. It's perfect for every age. I've recommended it to at least 10 other moms. Thank you!!!

It's hard to know if you are following the tips correctly. And, since every technique in the book is very "flexible", so to speak (which I enjoy), it's hard to know if they are working.My baby breastfeeds to sleep, and I'm trying the book technique. It doesn't quite goes as the book says, and my baby sure cries. But I've been trying for some days and don't have a clue if it's working or not.What I disliked about the book is that several parts of it are scanned images of the book, so I can't enlarge the font, or highlight the text. And since english is my second language, I sometimes need the dictionary, and it doesn't work with this book either. The job of converting the hardcover to kindle sure was half-assed.

The first half of the book had me reeling with dismay and much concern for the U.S. and other parts of the world. It is a thoroughly researched book. The second half of the book gave me hope and appreciation for the people who participate in pushing back hard on elements of fascism. The book is current and includes Charlottesville, VA as an example. I saw the pushback in real-time when Unite the Right failed to unite anyone in its much-publicized Unite the Right rally. Only 20+ cowards showed up, but thousands of counter-protesters were at the ready. This book explains the methods various anti-fascist groups use. Some methods are confrontation, but not all. This book also helped de-mystify "Antifa." Well worth reading -- it's easy and well-organized.

An important read for our times.

I've been reading around on the subject of contemporary white supremacist and ethnic nationalist groups, right wing populism, and fascism of and on for twenty years. I think this is one of the cleanest, clearest explanation of how fascists recruits, what they believe, and how to keep them at bay. There's enough historical framing here to justify Burley's concise definition of fascism is a movement that hopes to make implicit hierarchies explicit. Burley explains how these movements have survived, grown, and been back, how they recruit. Without Burley's guide through the Alt-Right and other strands of even more dangerous tendencies, we can see that fighting fascism today must go beyond Trotsky's famous united front and embrace a diversity of tactics.

Due to hearing the term fascism coming up in the news so often the past year I've read several books on the topic to deepen my understanding. None that I have read have done a better job of defining fascism and how it has evolved in the 21st century than Burley's latest work. There probably isn't a better resource for demystifying the "alt-right", due primarily to the fact that Shane was researching the associated groups long before they became a household name. This is also one of the best resources I've come across for understanding the broad spectrum of activist groups dedicated to opposing the rising tide of fascism.

The book outlines the entire ideological and American history of fascism, sets it in Trump's America, and gives a detailed look at how movements challenge it. The best book of its type I have ever read, I cannot recommend it more highly.

A timely and important book. Burley's work is well researched, informative, and incredibly useful.

I’ve just watched an hour-long interview with Burley from which I had two main takeaways:1. Everyone who isn’t a leftist is a fascist;2. The only way to suppress fascism is censorship.Burley doesn’t believe in unrestricted free speech. He thinks that certain truths are so obvious that no dissent or debate is justified. To Burley, there’s no difference between National Review and Der Sturmer. He believes that Antifa is a positive force, and it’s composed of people “willing to take the next step.”He comes across as a very intelligent and glib individual, which leads me to believe that he’s well aware of the real history of fascism, which is that it has its roots in the early 20th Century struggles between the red shirts- the internationalist Socialists- and the black shirts, the nationalist socialists. The red shirts were the communists, the black shirts included those who became the fascists. Mussolini devised Fascism as a movement that had the populist appeal of socialism, but rejected Soviet-style internationalist government. Hitler used this as the basis of his National Socialism, and as Robert Conquest sagely observed long ago, when it came down to actual practice there wasn’t a whit of difference between the two.
